Dear Fellow Dog Lovers,

With Halloween over and Thanksgiving fast approaching, time seems to fly by ever faster. As the bustle of the holiday season begins, I hope that people will remember that there are wonderful dogs and cats waiting for their forever homes at WHS. Before I tell you about this week’s featured dogs, here are the Blog Dogs who were adopted in the last week.

I was so excited that I was at the shelter when Endo’s family found him. Here they are as they were leaving to go home. I think he knew that he finally had a forever home.

Chatter

Sunday’s play group was very active, especially on the little-dog side. I caught this moment when Marlin, a five-year-old Terrier mix who has been at WHS since August 8, asked Sarah a heartfelt question.

Several of us were discussing Marlin on Sunday and wondering why this shy, sweet boy hasn’t won someone’s heart yet. I’m hoping that next week will finally be his lucky one.

I have fallen in love with yet another Pit Bull Terrier mix. This one’s name is Kewpie and she’s two years old. I’ll have more to say about this sweetheart later in the post, but here is the comical scene I caught on Sunday.

All kidding aside, Kewpie wasn’t actually stuck, but she sure had a good time playing with her friends.

I’m an older fellow looking for an indoor life!

One of the new dogs I met on Sunday was Murphy, a ten-year-old Irish Setter mix who is such a good older boy. He walks well on leash and would love to settle in with his family while they watch TV or read and he snoozes at their feet. The one thing Murphy needs to work on is how to take tasty treats gently. He takes them rather roughly, so his new family will need to work with him on this skill. Here he is with Sarah who, like me, instantly loved Murphy.

Yep, I’m a winner!

After play group and taking new dog pictures on Sunday, I was eager to spend some time with Kewpie to get to know her better. I had already fallen for her cute floppy ears and face, and it didn’t take me long to fall for her personality as well. Kewpie is affectionate, takes treats politely, walks well on leash, is house-trained, and loves to ride in cars. She played very well with the little dogs and seemed more comfortable with them than with the bigger ones. She is treat-motivated, so will be easy to train even more. Some family is going to be very lucky to find this peach of a girl. Here are a couple of pictures of Sarah and my time with her on Sunday. And here she is today with Debbie.

I’m new here and a little shy. I’m hoping for a new family soon.

One of the first dogs I saw being walked this afternoon was Starlight, a two-year-old Pit Bull Terrier/Lab mix. Carol was walking her and told me that Starlight is a delightful dog. She walks well on leash and seems like a very gentle soul. She was found as a stray, so we don’t know her history, but she gets along with everyone (human and canine) and knows some commands. She could lose a few pounds which she would love to do by taking walks around the neighborhood. She took my treats gently, but I couldn’t get her to smile. I think she’ll make a wonderful family dog.

It didn’t take me long to win Steve’s heart!

Bruno is a four-year-old S.T.A.R.T. (Shelter Transport Animal Rescue Team) dog who was taken from a shelter in California and brought to WHS to become an Oregon dog. He is a Lab mix and is a very happy fellow. Steve took him out to the big yard and the two had a rousing game of fetch. Bruno loves people and other dogs. He’ll be perfect for an active family who is ready for fun!

In the middle of this photo session, Bruno suddenly flopped over and asked Steve for a belly rub.

Then it was time to RUN!

Can you guess what mix I am?

This beautiful boy is Franklin, a one-year-old Rottweiler/Australian Cattle Dog. Today Angie took him out for his walk. We sat in the grass a while and visited and Franklin leaned against me as he munched hot dog bits. Being at the shelter is stressful for Franklin and he is very nervous around the other dogs. He has a “hold” on him, so we’re hoping he’ll soon be going home to a more relaxing environment for him.

I’m using my puppy eyes to make you want me!

As I mentioned earlier in this post, I don’t understand why little Marlin has not found a forever home yet. I mean, look at that cute face! Joan spent time with him today and as you can see, he decided her lap was a very nice place to be out of the rain. Fingers crossed that he’ll find his new people in the coming week.

Calling Beagle lovers with secure fences! We need you!

 Tara and Hunter, the bonded Beagle mixes (eight and nine years old), are still waiting for their perfect family. They will need a secure yard, as they like to go on adventures that they shouldn’t if they get the chance. They have been outdoor dogs and are ready to be indoor/outdoor dogs for the rest of their lives. They have lots of spunk and energy and would love to go on long walks to lose some of the middle-age weight gain that has crept on. They have become shelter favorites and whenever I see them out getting walked, the volunteers are always smiling. Here they are today with Angie and Carol. They have been at WHS since September 21 and really want to have a family of their own.

I’m still here…waiting…waiting.

Faye, a two-year-old Pit Bull Terrier mix, another S.T.A.R.T. rescued dog from California, has been waiting for her new people since August. Today I made a flyer about her with pictures and put it on her kennel so people can see what a good girl she can be outside. Faye’s kennel presentation is not good but is not an indication of her personality on the “outside.” Today Joan played fetch with her in a yard and later Debbie took her out again. We all love this goofy character and hope that the perfect adopter will look beyond her kennel behavior and see what a sweetheart she really is.

Loveable Gilbert is also still waiting.

Gilbert is a two-year-old Pit Bull Terrier mix who has been in a foster home for almost a year. He spends his weeks split between his foster home and the shelter. I made a movie about him some time ago and decided it is a good time to post it again hoping that a new person will see it and fall in love.

Under all this hair is a great dog!

Meet Bon Jovi, a one-year-old Miniature Poodle mix. This little guy could use a trim, but underneath he’s a terrific boy. Today Jolene took him for a walk. He’s got a fun personality and has no idea he is actually a small dog. He will be a super family addition.

I just got here and I’m a little overwhelmed.

It’s always hard to be the new kid on the block and Maggie, a five-year-old Australian Cattle Dog mix, just arrived at the shelter two days ago. She is still very shy and unsure, but Carol’s gentle touch helped to relax her some. She did finally take some hot dog bits from me, though I didn’t give her many since she needs to lose a few pesky pounds. Maggie would do best as the only pet in a family, as she prefers people to other animals. I hope she’ll be adopted quickly.

What? No smile today, Emma?

Emma was in a serious mood this afternoon as she wasn’t very happy with the rain. If you are a regular reader of my blog posts, you know that Emma, a three-year-old American Staffordshire mix, is another S.T.A.R.T. rescued dog who is hoping to being a new and happy life in Oregon. She has developed quite a fan club who are all rooting for a happily-ever-after home for this sweet girl. Here she is today with Carol. Try as I might, I didn’t get her to smile today.

Got energy? You bet!

The last dogs I photographed today were two sporting the dreaded cones from being neutered and who are recovering from colds. They are good buddies, so they are sharing a kennel. They are both S.T.A.R.T.-rescued dogs, also. Little Troy is a one-year-old Shih Tzu/Toy Poodle mix and Duffy is a three-year-old Terrier mix. Both were feeling mighty frisky when Jolene took them outside and I was lucky to catch them both sitting still for a nanosecond so I could snap this picture! They are adorable!

Remember, if you see a dog on my blog whom you are interested in meeting, try to make arrangements to get to the Willamette Humane Society soon. Some dogs are adopted more quickly than you might think.
