Dear Fellow Dog Lovers,

This was another great week for adoptions at Willamette Humane Society! There were a total of 18 dogs adopted! Of them these twelve were Blog Dogs!

I got a couple of staff pictures of dogs going home.

First, Sheba with her new people.

Sheba

Logan will have a great time with his two human brothers!

Looks like Little Mack will have a wonderful new home!Mack going home

Chatter

Play group on Sunday was the usual fun and chatter. Kya and Bo, both WHS alumni, spent a moment reflecting on the old days.

Page_3

And little Quilo took their advice to heart.

Page_4

Newbie Angel was a tad rude to Sherrie’s dog, Harley, when he stuck out his tongue, but in fairness, Angel WAS first, and being new, he didn’t know all the rules yet.Page_1

We don’t think Angel has ever met a person or dog he hasn’t liked!

A delightful evening with Humane-a-Teens.

On Monday, I spent some time with a wonderful group of kids who are part of the WHS Humane-a-Teen group. This club is open to middle and high school students in Marion and Polk counties. I gave them some pointers on dog and cat photography and they practiced taking great shots of some of our adoptables. Here are some pics from the photo session.

First was Shelby taking pictures of Whisper. (Yes, I know this is a Dog Blog, but hey, this was a special night!) Whisper is a seven-year-old female who seemed to enjoy posing. She loved the attention she got from the kids, was playful, and enjoyed being petted. Whisper would do best in a calm home.

Next was Watson, whom I’m happy to report was just adopted! Emma had fun snapping pictures of this fun and active character.

DSC_0052 DSC_0063 DSC_0056

Then it was some dogs’ turns. First Bryanne learned that Angel‘s attention was easily captured with a hot dog bit. (More on Angel later in this post.)

DSC_0067 DSC_0080

Emma discovered that Mia will stay in a sit as long as she can focus on soon getting a tasty bite. Mia is a four-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix.

DSC_0096

Brianna and Rachel worked with Sasha trying to get the perfect pose. Sasha is one-year-old Bull Dog/Pit Bull Terrier mix.

DSC_0150DSC_0120 DSC_0103It was a fun evening and it gave me confidence that there will be devoted animal lovers who will be volunteering for WHS far into the future.

I’m just about the best dog you ever met!

One of the new arrivals to the shelter whom I met on Sunday was Angel, an eight-year-old Pit Bull Terrier mix who is a gentle, and rather large cuddle buddy. You just can’t help but smile when he looks at you with his big head and happy grin. Some family is going to be sooo lucky to adopt him. He has a great history with kids. He walks well on leash. He was in play group on Sunday and had a wonderful time, getting along with everyone. What a great dog! Here he is with Taya.

DSCN7990

And here Angel is today with Steve. Notice he’s still smiling even while wearing a cone after being neutered. What a guy!
DSCN8330

I’ve been here awhile and I can’t wait for a new home!

Grommet is a six-year-old Lab/Chow mix who has been at WHS for a month. He is a friendly, active boy who needs to be the only pet in the family. He also needs a very secure yard, as he likes to go on adventures. Grommet would love to be an indoor dog so he can be your buddy. His favorite thing to do is hang out with his people. He is treat motivated and would enjoy learning new tricks and skills. Here he is on Sunday with Wendi.

DSCN8092

And here he is today, still smiling, with Jolene.

DSCN8269

My name is Felicity and I’m available!

I couldn’t wait for this sweetheart to be adoptable! I even got to name her (actually, my husband came up with her perfect name!). Felicity is a stray, so we don’t know about her past, but she is wonderful. She is young and enthusiastic and though she will jump for joy, and can be a bit mouthy, she instantly responds to what you want from her. She sits and lies down when asked. She walks well on leash (she will start to pull a little but the minute she realizes you want to go another way, she corrects herself). She is about a year old and is a Lab/Pit Bull Terrier mix. Some family is going to be VERY lucky to adopt her!

DSCN7789 DSCN7770

Meet Black Jack…a big personality in a small body.

This cute little man is Black Jack, a three-year-old Dachshund mix who had a great time with Trish today. Black Jack is a snuggler and loves to go for long walks, too. He’ll be a wonderful companion for someone looking for a small (14 pounds) new best friend.

DSCN8230

Emelynn’s Pick of the Week!

Emelynn spent time with this youngster, Carlton, last week and again this week, taking him out twice. He is a nine-month-old Plott Hound/Pit Bull Terrier mix. Notice he is sitting here calmly with Emelynn? Don’t be fooled, this pup is ACTIVE! He can be a bit shy at first, but quickly gets comfortable and then he’s ready to PLAY! Emelynn reports that he also likes to cuddle and just be with a person. I have a feeling he’ll be adopted very soon!

DSCN8410

I have no idea why my name is Zoomie! Do you?

Trish took new arrival Zoomie out to the big yard today and he lived up to his name! This eight-year-old Lab mix is a wonderful, happy boy who is hoping for an active new family to love. He lives to play fetch! He’s a very good dog!

 DSCN8301 DSCN8325 DSCN8310 2Page_2

Later, after all of the dogs had been walked, I happened to see Joan out with Zoomie again. I love his face!

DSCN8398 DSCN8397

I took some time away to get de-stressed and now I’m back!

Remember Candie, the beautiful five-year-old S.T.A.R.T. dog from a few weeks ago? She was getting very stressed in the kennel environment and so was sent to an amazing training facility in Eugene called Sevadog for some de-stressing/evaluation time. On Sunday Taya and I drove down to Eugene to pick Candie up and bring her back. She was such a good girl in the car, sleeping most of the way home.

DSCN8208 DSCN8203 DSCN8209Her evaluation could not have been better! Here’s just a little of the praise the trainer wrote to us about her:

“Over the course of a week she’s proven to be an extremely stable, affectionate and playful dog. My assumptions are that she lived as a family dog or a companion dog, spending the majority of her time inside or in their fenced yard. It seems she’s had little exposure out on walks, on leash. She would not do well with cats, but would do excellent with any stable male dog that enjoys rough play. She will make a fantastic companion for someone seeking an affectionate dog to snuggle with, sleep with, and be a lifetime family dog. She’s great in the car… She will not climb on furniture unless invited. She has incredible manners… She wouldn’t be be the best fit for an active person who wants a good leash dog unless they are committed to ongoing leash training. Pit or strong dog experience would be best. She is ready for a home.”

This afternoon Jolene had Candie out when Kathy arrived. It was the first time she had seen Candie since her return.

DSCN8210 DSCN8213 DSCN8214 DSCN8219Later I took her out again and snapped these pictures.

DSCN8403 DSCN8408 DSCN8409Candie’s many fans are all hoping that the perfect fit of a family will discover this terrific girl very soon!

We’re still here!

Just before I left today, I stopped to say hi to Peanut and Cosmo, the bonded pair of six-year-olds I featured last week. They were at the front of their kennel and I could tell they had a question for me. These two are such delightful and funny characters. I’m so hoping the right family will find and adopt them soon!

Update!

Amber/Lemon

I know you will all remember Lemon, now Amber, who was adopted by my fellow Wednesday volunteers Steve and Joan. Here are a couple of pictures they sent (with my speech bubbles!) and a note from Steve. This is one lucky dog! Could she BE any more comfortable?!

Amber

Amber and her new brother, Tucker.

Page_1 2“Martha told Joan one Wednesday back in January that she just loved this new dog, Lemon, and Joan told me to go sit with her. I did and she cuddled up and laid on me and could not get enough petting and head holding. I was so hooked! We talked it over and were going to put a hold in the next day. Someone beat us to her and scooped her up.  We got a second chance when she was brought back to the shelter for separation anxiety issues. We took her home though we had concerns over our old dog being kind of a curmudgeon who didn’t like sharing his house with a new dog. That took a little while, but they are getting along well now. We changed Lemon’s name to Amber and she got used to it very easily. She’s so great and she seems very trainable, except for a few things she likes doing that we’ll keep working on. I remembered an old bluegrass song by The Dillards that I hadn’t heard in ages. I dug it out and played it. The chorus goes:  ‘Redbone Hound, come and get your belly up…lying on your tail all day long… Gonna’ run ’til the dew on the grass meets the sun.’ Love the song and our new dog, Amber.”

And that’s it for this week!

Remember, if you see a dog on my blog whom you are interested in meeting, try to make arrangements to get to the Willamette Humane Society soon. Some dogs are adopted more quickly than you might think.

Dear Fellow Dog Lovers,

Wow! What a great week for dog adoptions, not only for some long-termers, but for some newbies to the shelter as well. I am thrilled to be able to report the following happy new beginnings.

Page_1 Page_2 Page_3 Page_4 Page_6Page_5 2The staff sent me this picture of Ramona going home with one of the WHS Board members!

photo 2

They also sent this one of puppy Stanley going home. He’s going to grow up into a big boy!

Stanley

I happened to be at WHS when Poppi went home with her new family and got this shot.

Poppi

Lemon was adopted by a couple you see nearly every week in my posts, Steve and Joan, two Wednesday afternoon dog walkers. They fell for this girl instantly and were sad when she was adopted before they made their move. When she was returned because the family wasn’t the right fit for Lemon, Steve and Joan took her home. Her name is now Amber and she is one lucky dog! Remember this shot with Joan a couple of weeks ago? I think Amber knew her life was about to become a whole lot better!

DSCN6765

It was good to be back in play group on Sunday once again. We currently have a lot of small dogs and Harmony and Ali had a blast with them. They all seemed to think they are lap dogs!

DSCN7349I happened to catch Peanut, a six-year-old Chihuahua, in an awkward moment. Luckily Cosmo is his best friend and he took it in stride.

Page_3 2In the big dog yard, there was the usual chatter.

Mia wanted Oliver, a one-year-old American Staffordshire mix, to play chase but Harley (volunteer Sherrie’s dog) wanted nothing to do with the game.

Page_1 2

Cromwell, a one-year-old Shepherd mix, enjoyed simply racing around the yard.

Page_2 2

Casper had other things on his mind.    Page_4 copy

Sunday was a busy day at the shelter. There were lots of visitors looking at dogs and lots of new dogs for me to photograph. I am lucky to have so many dog walkers who are happy to help me and let me snap pictures of them as well as the dogs. First was Bruce and little Fischer.

Don’t mind my cone, it’s only temporary!

Fischer is a one-year-old Chihuahua mix with lots of energy and personality to match. He’s got that one-ear-up-one-ear-down thing going on which makes him even cuter. He walks well on leash and loved my hot dog bits. We’re not sure he is completely house trained. He would benefit from coming to a WHS training class, as he’s still a youngster. He is gentle and will do well with kids in an active family. He enjoys posing for pictures!

DSCN7450

I’m looking for a quiet retirement home. Could it be yours?

How quickly can a dog become a favorite among volunteers and staff? Just ask Lady Lilac and she’ll tell you it can happen instantly! Lady Lilac came to us after the death of her owner. She is thirteen years old and, not surprisingly, has some age-related issues. She is a gentle and extremely sweet purebred Miniature Poodle. She, and we, are hoping for a quiet, calm family who will care for her for the rest of her life. Taya fell in love with her just as we all have.

DSCN7496

Here was Lady Lilac today with Debbie. As she pranced down the trail, she certainly didn’t seem to be thirteen!

DSCN7861DSCN7862

Yes, I’m a very short Lab mix and my best friend is Peanut!

Two S.T.A.R.T. newbies from California are Cosmo and Peanut. Cosmo is a six-year-old Lab/?? mix (Basset Hound? Corgi?) He’s not quite sure. He looks like a Lab on very short legs. We do know that he and Peanut have been together most of their lives and would like to go to a new home together. Both are happy, playful dogs as we found out in play group on Sunday. Here Cosmo is with Diane who found him to be a delight.

DSCN7492

That’s right, my best friend forever is Cosmo!

Peanut is a six-year-old Chihuahua mix. He and Cosmos were abandoned by their owner in California, so are looking for a new Oregon home together. They have a great combined adoption fee. Since they are a bonded pair, we are rooting for them to go to one home. Here Peanut was enjoying some time with Francis on Sunday.

DSCN7465Today Joan and Jolene took the pair out and had a great time playing with them in the big yard.

DSCN7845 DSCN7849 DSCN7851I’m still here…I’m a gentle giant; just no cats, please.

Max is still waiting for his perfect fit…a home with no cats. (Max just can’t help chasing them.) At 109 pounds, this Rottweiler mix is a big boy. He gets along well with other dogs and did great in the home with the kids. As you can see he’s a big teddy bear with people. Here he is with Bruce. Max isn’t a really active guy, more of a couch potato (if the couch is a big one!). We’re hoping he won’t have to stay much longer at WHS.

DSCN7535 DSCN7532 DSCN7528

I’m young, eager, and can’t wait to meet you!

Nike is a one-year-old Pit Bull Terrier mix who enjoyed hanging out with Bill on Sunday. She is an active young gal who is waiting for a family to match. She would love to attend some of WHS’ training classes to add to things she already knows, like sit. Nike was found as a stray, so we don’t know anything about her history, but she likes people and has gotten along with other dogs at the shelter (she prefers males). She’ll make a great dog for a family with older kids.

DSCN7589

See this smile? You could wake up to it every day!

One of the newbies at the shelter is Sasha, a one-year-old Bull Dog/Pit Bull Terrier mix. Sasha is a S.T.A.R.T. dog from California. While she is great with people, she will need to be an only pet. She has lots of energy, so will need an active family with older kids. Although she hates to admit it, she is a little on the chunky side and would appreciate some help to lose some of the pesky extra pounds she’s put on. Bruce and Sasha had a great time together on Sunday.

DSCN7606

We’re still here waiting for a family who will adopt us both!

Remember Rico and Quilo, the bonded pair of Chihuahua mixes from last week? They are still hanging out in their kennel hoping for a new family. I snapped this picture of them before I left Sunday. They are six and seven years old and are sweethearts. I hope they will find their new home together very soon.

Emelynn and I took them out this afternoon. They really seemed to enjoy posing for my camera.

DSCN7924

I’m looking for a new family. Think it could be yours?

Logan is a four-year-old Lab/Border Collie mix who is just about the perfect boy. He has had some training (will sit and lie down when asked), is house trained, polite, gets along with other dogs (and maybe even cats!) He will need a secure yard. Logan spent some happy time with Trish today playing ball. He’s great at chasing it, not so great at bringing it back. I have a feeling he will find his new family soon!

Logan

I’m new to the shelter but I have become a favorite here already!

This is Maggie, a three-year-old Akita/Pit Bull Terrier mix who is such a sweet girl. She has been mostly an outdoor dog, and would like to spend more time indoors. She loves kids and other dogs. She is house trained and knows several commands. Jolene said she walks great on leash. Sounds like the perfect family dog to me!

DSCN7811

When you first meet me, I may seem a little shy…but watch me play!

Marlo is a four-year-old Lab mix who at first meeting is quite shy. Joan took him outside and he really didn’t want to look at my camera.

DSCN7768But a little later, Joan called me over to the big yard. Marlo had come out of his shell and was having a blast playing fetch. It was great to see him having so much fun! He will be such a wonderful addition to an active family!

DSCN7885 DSCN7886 DSCN7887 DSCN7892 DSCN7896

I don’t have my cone anymore!

A couple of weeks ago, I introduced Sheba, a four-year-old Boxer/Pit/Lab mix. She was wearing a cone after being spayed, but was being a good sport about it and not complaining. Today the cone was gone and Trish took her out for a long walk. I don’t know when I’ve seen such sincere eyes. Sheba is well-mannered, knows some commands and took my treats politely. We think she will do well with children and other dogs. She is one of my current favorites.

DSCN7826

I love her face!

DSCN7837

Emelynn’s Pick of the Week!

Emelynn and I spent some quality time with one of our favorites, Cromwell, this afternoon. Cromwell is a one-year-old Shepherd mix. He can be a bit nervous at first, but warms up quickly. He had a wonderful time in play group on Sunday, getting along with other dogs and enjoying simply running.

DSCN7870 DSCN7869Emelynn and I decided to play the “Come Get It” game with him and he LOVED it. Back and forth he would race, first to Emelynn, make a screeching stop, sit, get a treat, then race back to me.

DSCN7901 DSCN7900We took a tired boy back to his kennel. We’re hoping the perfect fit of a family will find him soon.

Updates

We have two fun updates today.

Maggie/Rainbow

First, a dog I never got the chance to meet. She came to us as a puppy, went straight to a foster home, then was adopted from there. Here Rainbow was when she first arrived at WHS.

RainbowHere’s what her family wrote: “Maggie (formerly Rainbow) just celebrated her first birthday in our home.  We have been fortunate enough to have her since she was spayed, so we’ve made it through some tough puppy months.  We have trained her a lot, mostly how to sit, lay down, stay, come, and we’re working on how to roll over.  She sleeps in her dog bed and can let herself inside and outside through a dog door.  She can be mischievous at times, but is very sweet and loving.  Overall Maggie is a great dog and we love her so very much!”

And here she is now…

IMG_20140130_193121261

Bear

Remember Bear? Here he was at WHS. Loved this guy when he was was at the shelter. If someone had asked if he would get along with cats, I think I would have doubted it.

Bear“I just wanted to send you an update on Bear. He is doing so well. We have a good routine in the mornings. He is really attached to us as a family. He loves to go for car rides. He wants at least one car ride a day. The cats and he have really gotten along. They even play together. He is so excited when I get home from work. The picture is of two of our cats and Bear looking  out the window at the birds after the snow.
Thanks so much”

Bear and cat

That’s it for this week!
