Dear Fellow Dog Lovers,
The Spring surge of adoptions continues! It’s always such fun to post the week’s adoptions of dogs I have written about on this blog. Here is this week’s happy news.
I was especially excited about Dixon’s adoption. He’d been waiting for over a month and was getting so stressed. After finally getting his cone off, he was able to go to play group on Sunday and then his new family showed up and off he went. I was thrilled that I got to say goodbye to him and snap these pictures.
Although you can’t see it in the shot below, Dixon is carrying a new ball in his mouth. Needless to say, he was a very happy boy! Last night his new family sent the following update. “Dixon is having a blast playing catch daily, going on walks and learning to play nice with the cats. Everyone comments how gorgeous and well behaved he is.” So happy for this wonderful dog!
Another very happy new beginning was Walter and Fritz’s adoption. Yes, they went home together! Here’s a staff picture of them just before they left.
Here is another staff picture of Jane going home. Even though she had to leave in a cone, it was a very good day!
Chatter
There was a LOT of chatter in play group on Sunday. Being a retired elementary teacher, I am occasionally reminded of playground duty and having a “talk” at times like this.
Kim can always use an assistant to help her decide in what order to bring out the dogs. Today it was Lil Bit who came to her aid.
The little dogs decided to play under the platform. Rocky and Coral felt left out.
Lady Bear was above it all.
Sunny and Tabitha had a great time playing together.
Meanwhile in the big-dog yard, Dixon and Onyx were feeling quite excited.
My name is Lil Bit but I have a BIG personality!
I am so surprised that this cutie hasn’t been adopted yet. Here Lil Bit is with volunteer Ali during play group. She decided early on that she preferred being in someone’s arms rather than on the ground. Lil Bit is a three-year-old Miniature Dachshund. She is playful but also likes to cuddle. She needs a little work on potty training, but she is well worth the effort. She’ll make a great companion.
I am waiting for someone to love me!
Blackie is a six-year-old, fifteen-pound Chihuahua mix. He’s a little embarrassed to admit that he has a couple of issues that he needs some help with, but otherwise he’s a great little dog. He would like some training in how to politely greet someone coming to the door and a refresher course in potty training. BUT! He is great with people, other dogs, and even some cats! Plus he loves treats (oh, did I mention he could lose a little weight, too?) and so should be easy to train. Blackie won both Taya’s and my hearts when we met him, and we hope a patient and understanding person will give this little guy a great home.
Looking for a youngster to add to your family? Meet Rocky!
New volunteer Jasmine spent some time on Sunday with Rocky, an eight-month-old Hound/Pit Bull Terrier mix. Rocky is still very much a puppy with tons of energy and few manners. He’ll need some training so that he’ll grow into a well-behaved dog. Happily, his adoption fee includes a WHS class, “Check in and Chill Out.” Rocky is a happy boy with lots of potential to become a great hiking or jogging partner.
We have little colds, but we’re almost well and ready to go to our new homes!
Often when a dog is in our ISO kennels because they have colds, people don’t make a point of visiting with them. Such is the case with Charlie Sir and Chipper, two S.T.A.R.T. rescues from California. Charlie Sir is a one-year-old Chihuahua mix who likes to be held, but also loves to go for a walk. He gets along with people and other dogs. He is eager, smart, and treat motivated, so will be easy to train. Here he is with Diane.
Chipper is a three-year-old Chihuahua mix and he, too, gets along with everyone, both people and canine. Chipper does very well with children. He would make a great jogging partner, but would be just as happy to go for walks. Here he is with Andrew.
I’m Tabitha and I’m a little shy, but I’m a good girl!
Tabitha is a one-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier mix. She is shy at first meeting, but warms up quickly and is a gentle, happy youngster. We don’t know her history, as she came from California, but she has very quickly won the hearts of many staff and volunteers, including mine and Jasmine’s. She did great in Sunday’s play group with both bigger and small dogs. She is going to make some lucky family a wonderful new addition.
Here she was hanging out with Harmony, Ali and the gang on Sunday.
Looking for a Beagle? I could fill that need!
Dodger is a seven-year-old Beagle mix who is a happy, slightly overweight, character. He arrived at the shelter on Sunday just as I was taking pictures of newbies. He is nervous around small children, so is looking for an adult home. True to his breed, he follows his nose. He loved my hot dog bits and took them politely. He walks well on leash and Diane and Andrew enjoyed their time with him on Sunday. Dodger would love a family who would take him for walks so he could lose those pesky extra middle-age pounds.
I’m quite shy, but if you’re looking for someone to cuddle with, I’m your dog!
This afternoon Emelynn and I met new arrival Jack, a one-year-old Australian Cattle Dog mix. I’ve photographed lots of dogs who have been nervous about my camera, but Jack takes the cake on camera uneasiness. Notice how he is not looking at me in the picture below. He would come to me happily to get a hot dog bit, but the second he saw the camera, he high-tailed it to hide behind Emelynn. He’s a beautiful boy and I finally got a head-on shot when I stood back far enough away that he didn’t notice the camera. Jack is a sweet, affectionate dog and loved Emelynn’s attention and belly rubs.
Emelynn’s Pick of the Week!
Meet little Cheeseburger, a four-month-old Chihuahua mix who is looking for a family to help him grow up into a happy, confident dog. This pup was quite nervous today when we took him to a visitation room for a picture, but enjoyed some hot dog bits and liked being in Emelynn’s arms. His adoption package includes the class “Surviving Puppyhood” which will help his family bond with him and learn how to work with him on potty training and other skills he’ll need. Cheeseburger is a charmer, and although he has a worried look, I told him I am sure he will be adopted quickly!
Enough with the ear jokes, please.
I had to laugh when I saw Sadie for the first time today. She looked like she might actually be able to fly with those huge ears! Sadie is a one-year-old Chihuahua mix who is about as sweet as they come. She loved being outside and happily snuggled against Emelynn as I snapped pictures. She took my hot dog bits gently and sat on command. This little girl will make a great addition for some lucky family!
That’s it for this week!
Remember, if you see a dog on my blog whom you are interested in meeting, try to make arrangements to get to the Willamette Humane Society soon. Some dogs are adopted more quickly than you might think.
