Dear Fellow Dog Lovers,

Among the nine dog adoptions during the past week, there was one that was extra-special. But before I tell you about her, here are the Blog Dogs who went to forever homes since my last post.

Yes, that is Juicy in the adopted pics! Juicy had been waiting for her perfect forever person since June 26th. It turned out that Sunday was the best day of her life. It started out with a field trip to Bush Park with volunteers Jolene, Linda, and her granddaughter, Harmony. Juicy was beautifully behaved (even with annoying squirrels taunting her) and had a grand time.

Then, back at the shelter in the afternoon, she was discovered by her perfect fit of a mom and on Monday she was adopted. Staff and volunteers are thrilled that this girl finally has a real home. She wanted to make the announcement herself.

 

 

I had a weekend respite and I was such a good girl!

One of our other long-term favorites, Rusty, got to go home with volunteer Allen and his wife Michelle. Here is Allen’s report about their weekend:

“We picked Rusty up from the Humane Society on Friday evening. She was excited to get in the car and hit the road.

Traffic was terrible pretty much everywhere we went but Rusty didn’t mind and quickly got comfortable in the back seat.

That really set the tone for our time with her. That evening we ordered pizza and watched a movie. We made a spot for Rusty on the couch and after her wiggles and rolls of happiness subsided, she settled in for the evening.

After the movie we went to bed and Rusty slept through the night. She woke up around 5:30, and we went outside. After she did what she needed to do we went back to sleep for a few more hours.

Saturday was filled with running errands and cleaning the house. Rusty waited patiently in the car while we drove around town, snoozing occasionally.

For most of the afternoon, she was content to lounge in the sun in our backyard while we cleaned the garage.

We had another night in and another good night of sleep. That next morning I took her back to the Humane Society. Michelle and I were both sad to say goodbye.

We have provided respite for quite a few shelter dogs and we both agree that Rusty is one of the easiest and sweetest we’ve had.”

None of us who know Rusty was surprised that she did so well with Allen and Michelle. She just loves to snuggle and snooze with her fans. Here she is with Marianne and me.

Rusty is a six-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier mix. She now has a hold and we are hoping she’ll soon finally be going home.

 

 

 

Martha and Marianne took me swimming again…I’m still not a fan, but afterward…

Our senior long-termer, Zoey, a thirteen-year-old Australian Cattle Dog mix, got to go swimming again last Friday. And while she still is not a fan of the pool, she seemed more relaxed once in it this time. Even though it’s not her favorite thing, we know the hydrotherapy helps her arthritis. To make it a little more fun, we promised her we’d stop for a cheeseburger after our session at Bailey’s Journey. As always, Zoey had lots to say.

Zoey has been waiting for a new family since July 15th. She hasn’t gotten discouraged, she just continues to patiently wait for her perfect fit of a person to find her. Zoey is older and needs to be with adults and not small children. She is house-trained and would not be much trouble to have around, as she’d enjoy short walks, then relaxing with her peeps. She has become a staff and volunteer favorite for her calm, sweet nature. But don’t be fooled, she can show some spunk, too. We’re hoping Zoey’s wait won’t be much longer.

 

 

 

I’m new at the shelter. I can’t wait to meet you!

Charlotte is a two-year-old Shepherd/Boxer mix. This beautiful girl is a bit shy at first meeting, but quickly warms up. Since she came to us from another shelter, we don’t know her history. She went to playgroup on Sunday and decided she wanted to be the “boss” of some of the dogs, though she was easy to redirect. She will need to meet any canine sibling she would live with to make sure they have the same play style. Charlotte enjoyed my treats and knows how to sit when asked. She’ll need to go home with older children (13+). She walks pretty well on leash and enjoyed spending time with Jenna on Sunday. She is a sweetheart.

 

 

 

I’m very shy and need someone who will go slow with me until I feel brave.

Little Cara is a twenty-three pound, five-year-old Schipperke/Spaniel mix. She came to us through our partnership with ASPCA from Texas. When she first arrived at WHS, she was extremely timid and scared, but now she is blossoming and showing a sweet and eager personality. She is still a bit hesitant when she meets a new person. Cara will need a family with older kids who will give her the time and positive rewards that she needs to gain confidence. We have no doubt that once she feels she is loved in a home, Cara will be a wonderful and devoted friend. Here she was on Sunday with Diane.

 

 

 

Everyone here has fallen in love with me! You will, too, just come and meet me!

Meet Rose, an enthusiastic, happy fifty-one pound American Staffordshire Terrier mix. She arrived last week from another shelter where she wasn’t adopted, and we’re hoping that she’ll find her forever family while with us. Rose is looking for a family who is active so she can go on adventures. She’d love to go camping, hiking, or jogging. She has been in playgroup with other dogs and done well with rough-and-rowdy dogs and likes to play chase with them. She knows several commands and loved my cheese bits. Because of her exuberance, she’ll need to go home with older kids (13+). Rose is anxious to meet her new family and hopes it is soon. Here she is with Christine on Sunday.

Update!

I got another update on Spencer this week! Here he was when he left WHS with his new moms.

You may remember that Barbara (left) reported in the last update that Spencer did not think vegetables were edible. Well, how things can change in a week!

“Spencer has learned that vegetables are worth eating.  One day I was
cutting up veggies and Gretta (our other dachshund) was enthusiastically
scarfing up whatever I dropped, accidentally or on purpose.  Spencer got
bored and lay down.  I threw a few carrot bits close enough that he could reach
them without getting up.  Letting Gretta take them wasn’t acceptable, of
course, so he nosed them around a bit, tasted them, ate them.  Soon he was
standing up eating squash bits.  Now he has added broccoli to his list of
acceptable foods.”
