Dear Fellow Dog Lovers,

It’s been a busy week at Willamette Humane Society with both terrific adoptions and wonderful newbies from our shelter partners. I can’t remember a time when we’ve had so many delightful adoptable dogs available. I’ll introduce you to many of them, but first, here are the dog adoptions from the past week.

Yes! That is Rusty in the list. All of her fans were so excited when this long-term sweetheart finally went home. Of course, she wanted to tell you herself.

rusty-adopted-2When the family arrived at WHS, the daughter already had the above photo as her screensaver on her phone! Here is the staff photo of Rusty and her new family.

Also adopted was newbie Goose. I just met him on Sunday and am thrilled that he was adopted so quickly. I want to show you a couple of the pictures I took of him the day before he went home. Here is Goose with new volunteer Gabi.

Another wonderful adoption was Tessa. This little girl has been in foster at volunteer Krystal’s house since the end of June. Several people were interested in her over the months, but none adopted her. While currently healthy, the possible recurrence of cancer made her a hospice adoption. Finally this week, Tessa found her forever home for however long she has. Thank goodness there are adopters who are committed to giving our dogs a quality life, not knowing how long that might be. Here Tessa is with her person and Krystal. An update on Tessa will be at the end of this post.

This is what you mean when you say “sit” isn’t it?

One of the new dogs I met on Sunday was this goofy little one named Johnny, a six-year-old Chihuahua mix.  He came to us from Texas and is hoping to find an Oregon family to love. I asked him to sit. This is what he did…over and over and over, every time I asked.

dsc_01312Finally, after multiple attempts, I caught him in a brief sit before he flopped over once again on his back.dsc_01352He happily sat when he was next to Diane. This little guy is a hoot and will be an entertaining and joyful new member of a lucky family.

Martha says I’m just about perfect. What do you think?

Sunday’s pictures of new dogs were all taken indoors since it was pouring outside. It can be quite a challenge for some energetic youngsters to sit still in small quarters with a big light flashing in their faces. So after several exuberant Chihuahuas gave me a run for my money, it was such a relief to meet Goblin, a two-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier mix. This sweet boy came to us from another Oregon shelter where he wasn’t adopted, and I can’t understand why. Goblin is such a gentle soul with people. He sat quietly while I snapped pictures and politely took cheese bits in between shots. He both sits and lies down when asked. But don’t think this boy doesn’t enjoy fun. In playgroup on Sunday, he was social and a very rough-and-rowdy player with his new dog friends. He scored extremely well in the shelter’s entry behavior evaluation. Because of his size (54 pounds) he should go home with older kids (13+). This handsome boy enjoyed his time with volunteer Jenna.

I’m a little timid, but give me a minute and I’ll lean against you!

Mario was found as a stray in Texas and, luckily for some Oregon family who doesn’t know it yet, he was transferred to our shelter. This sweet boy is just about perfect. He is a one-year-old Border Collie and ??? mix. He was nervous in the photo room, but tried his best to please Marianne and me. What he REALLY wanted to do was to crawl into our laps. He has such a gentle demeanor. It was hard to get a good picture of him inside, as he kept wanting to lean against us. So when there was a break in the rain, I took him outside and snapped a few shots. He walked fine on leash. We don’t know how long it’s been since Mario has had a family of his own. We’re hoping he’ll soon meet his forever family. I’m not sure who will be luckier, Mario or his peeps.

I was adopted and they loved me, but I need more room!

Jax is a three-year-old Retriever mix who is a happy-go-lucky, the bowl-is-half-full kind of boy. He is well-mannered, tolerant with other dogs, and LOVES tennis balls. He did great in playgroups, spending most of his time searching for lost tennis balls. But he didn’t hoard them and didn’t object when another dog picked one up. He knows several commands, and since he is highly treat-motivated, it will be a breeze to teach him more skills. He was adopted last week, but his energy level was too much for the other family dog who got tired of playing before Jax did. The family had nothing but good things to say about Jax, including that he loves Kongs and totally ignored their cat. Jax is waiting for just the right fit of an active family. Here he is with volunteer Kim.

I’m from Texas, too, looking forward to settling in Oregon!

Mac is another new arrival who was found as a stray in San Antonio. He’s a one-year-old, twenty-nine pound Retriever mix. He’s such a great size for many families and will be an excellent friend to the kids ten and older. Mac knows several commands and was such a good sport in the photo room on Sunday. He loved my cheese bits and took them politely. He scored very well in his initial behavior evaluation. This boy is a keeper and we hope he’ll soon be snuggling with his new Oregon family. Here he was with Diane on Sunday.

Updates!

Phoebe

A few weeks ago two adorable puppies were transferred to WHS. I snapped this picture just after they arrived. That’s Phoebe on the left.

Puppies

Last week I got this happy update on this sweet pup:

“Sirikanda and I want everyone to know that Phoebe has her forever home. We picked her up on September 26th – Chris & Sirikanda”

Tessa

Tessa’s new person sent pictures of her settling in at her new home. She has a dog sibling named Max. Here’s what her new mom wrote: “Max ADORES HER. The adjustment I thought would take two weeks took less than two hours. Max lies on his back and she runs all around him and dives at him and then stops to clean his eyeballs occasionally….. If I’m holding her and he doesn’t realize it, he searches every room in the house…You can see the panic on his face.  They LOVE LOVE LOVE each other!! And she is bringing me NOTHING BUT JOY!!!”

On that happy update, that’s it for this week!

MacRemember, if you see a dog on my blog whom you are interested in meeting, try to make arrangements to get to the Willamette Humane Society soon. Some dogs are adopted more quickly than you might think.
