Dear Fellow Dog Lovers,
Welcome to the annual St. Patrick’s Day Shelter Dog Celebration Post! The dogs were very excited when they realized they were going to celebrate by donning green, the volunteers didn’t seem quite as excited.
But first, here are the Blog Dogs who were adopted last week!
I was a star at Subaru!
Axel got to have another adventure last week! He was chosen to represent the shelter in a photo shoot with Callie, the WHS Communications Manager. Remember the Subaru Share the Love event over the holidays? Subaru donated $250 to the charity of the buyers’ choices for every new car purchased, and WHS was the hometown charity Subaru chose. The dealership’s top salesman was Tyler who posed with our Axel for the cover of the upcoming WHS Spring Brief Paws issue. Everyone had a great time and Tyler found out just how much Axel loves to give kisses.
Axel has been waiting for his new forever family since February 23. He has become such a favorite because of his goofy, affectionate personality.
It was such a beautiful day on Sunday, that we took him out for some “blanket time” with his fan club: Marianne, Caroline, Caitlin, Kelsey and me. Axel is a three-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier mix. He is an active boy who loves to play with any toy he has. But after some energetic exercise, Axel loves nothing more than relaxing with his peeps, toy stuffed in his mouth. He is house-trained and knows basic commands. He is a good listener and loves to learn. He’d be great in a family with older (10+) kids, but wants to be the only pet. We’re all hoping that Axel won’t have to wait much longer for his forever home. He was so cooperative about dressing up for St. Patrick’s Day!
Yep, the silly boy actually took a little nap!
And then there are those times when you are distracted from your fans.
Maybe I’ll catch my new person’s eye with my dapper attire!
Rosco never gives up hoping that his person is just around the corner, about to find him and take him home. He totally cooperated when I asked if he’d wear a St. Patrick’s Day scarf. I think he was relieved I didn’t expect him to wear a pair of ridiculous glasses, like Daniel’s. Rosco has been at the shelter since last October. We think he views the shelter as his home and all of the staff and volunteers, his family. While he seems content, we all know how much happier he would be if he had a real home and family. Rosco is a four-year-old Dutch Shepherd mix who is looking for a home where he can be the only pet. His ideal home will be one where his people are interested in continuing his rewards-based training and who will give him physical exercise every day. He loves walks, playing fetch, and toys. He’s a very social guy who greatly enjoys humans—teenagers and above. Rosco is one of my all-time favorite dogs.
I’m not sure why we’re all dressed up, but if it helps me get adopted, I’m in!
Millie is a one-year-old Pointer mix who is looking for a family who wants a high-energy dog for runs, hiking—any kind of adventure, really. Millie is one of our transfers from Texas. She knows a few commands, but needs more rewards-based training. Since she is smart, eager and friendly, training will be fun for both her person and Millie herself. The first thing I noticed about her was her beautiful silky coat. Here she was on Sunday with Shannon and Elizabeth.
I am a little shy, but oh, I will soon love you with all my heart!
Charlotte is an eight-year-old sweetheart looking for a family with older kids (due to her shyness) and a calm lifestyle. This girl has won the hearts of everyone she has met at the shelter, including mine. She is an American Staffordshire Terrier mix, is house-trained, and has lived with both cats and other dogs. She is not a big player, but loves to just hang out with her family, watch a little TV, munch on a few treats, and maybe take a nap with her head in your lap. She loved my cheese bits and happily posed for pictures in the real room. This girl will be a wonderful, uncomplicated family member. We hope she goes home very soon. She didn’t mind dressing up with Marianne one bit.
I’m a jokester, a player, and a snuggler! What more could you want?
Some dogs just make you laugh—maybe it’s their happy expression, their antics, or perhaps their goofy personality. With Jasper, it’s all of these things. Jasper is a three-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier mix from California. At sixty-seven pounds, he has a lot of energy and wants to play, play, play. He LOVES people and can be gentle and affectionate after play times. Jasper was adopted once, but the family lived in an apartment and they felt Jasper would be happier if he had a yard in which to run. Due to his size and energy level, he’ll need older, sturdy kids. This boy is constantly smiling and game for anything. St. Patrick’s Day bow-tie? Sure! Silly head band? Why not? For a family looking for a lively, glass-is-half-full kind of dog, Jasper is your boy! Here he was joking around with Marianne and Caitlin on Sunday.
My problem is my kennel presentation. I know, I know, I need to work on it!
Girlie, a seven-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier mix, continues to be one of our all-time favorite dogs EVER! Marianne has given her “make better life choices” talk to Girlie and we’re hoping it will make an impression. Girlie’s problem is that she doesn’t show well in her shelter kennel. She does some barking and people walk on by, thinking this is who she is. What they don’t see is what a delight she is when not stressed in a shelter kennel. Here she was posing with Shannon and Elizabeth for her St. Patrick’s Day pic.
Then later Caitlin, Marianne, Caroline, Kelsey and I took her out for some “blanket time” on Sunday and she loved every minute. If only potential adopters could see her true personality as we do! Daniel stopped by on his way home to say hi.
The Real Room is being renovated, so today we took Girlie into the Ed Hall for some play time. First, she wanted to take a few more St. Patrick’s Day shots, so I asked if I could pose with her.
Then we had some play time. While Girlie loves to be a couch potato, she also loves to romp!
I just got here, so missed out on the St. Patrick’s Day dress-up, but Martha says I’m too special not to be included in this post!
This afternoon we spent some time with newly arrived Chow Chow, a four-year-old Shepherd mix. Chow Chow is a beautiful girl who scored so well on her behavior assessment that she can go home with pretty much any age! She is having some blood work done and won’t be able to leave the shelter for a few days, but oh, what a wonderful new family addition she will be! Someone is going to be mighty lucky to adopt this gem! Here she was with Jolene this afternoon. She can definitely relax!
This is Coal, a one-year-old Retriever mix, here with Jenna.
This is Paloma, a one-year-old Boxer mix with Laslo.
Here is Clooney, an eight-month-old American Staffordshire Terrier mix, with Laslo.
These last two, Houston and Atlanta both have three holds on them, but I couldn’t resist putting their St. Patrick’s Day photos in this post with Caitlin.
Zoey!
Remember Zoey, our sweet senior girl who had everyone wrapped around her paw?
Her person brought her to public playgroup on Sunday and afterward came over to where I was taking St. Patrick’s Day pics to say hi. I was thrilled to see Zoey and, of course, asked her to pose. She is doing wonderfully! Such a great life for her!
That’s it for this week! Happy St. Patrick’s Day from all of the shelter dogs!
Remember, if you see a dog on my blog whom you are interested in meeting, try to make arrangements to get to the Willamette Humane Society soon. Some dogs are adopted more quickly than you might think.
