Dear Fellow Dog Lovers,
Our exceptionally wonderful dog adoptions continued this week! Our sweet Feona was adopted on Sunday. Feona’s story started with noticing her limping during play groups. It turned out she needed expensive knee surgery. Amazingly, the cost was raised by inmates at OSCI (Oregon State Correctional Institution) and Feona’s operation was done at OSU followed by eight weeks of crate rest and physical therapy while she recovered in a foster home. Through it all, Feona remained a happy, cooperative girl. I was thrilled to be at the shelter on Sunday when she went to her forever home. Here is her going-away picture with her new person.
I may not be a BIG dog, but I’ll keep you active!
Jewel is just that, a jewel of a dog. A Chihuahua mix, she was transferred to us from a California shelter and is full of energy and fun. At two years old, she still acts much like a puppy. She has a little cold at the moment, so is spending some time in our ISO kennels, but that hasn’t stopped her from playing her version of fetch, which is to dash madly after the tennis ball, then veer off after a bug. This little dog keeps us laughing.
Here she is in action!
I’m new here and everybody keeps telling me I’m a perfect dog, so it must be true!
Meet Xena, a two-year-old Retriever mix who is smart, eager, and happy. This girl has it all, she loves to learn new skills and already has the basics down. Her family had to surrender her because they were moving out of state and couldn’t take her with them. She has lived with children and so is listed as PG+8. Xena is calm and loves being with people. She has some allergies, so her new family will need to work with the vet to get her skin in tip-top condition. Here she was with Marianne on Sunday. What a lovely dog she is!
This pose always makes me laugh.
Today Marianne and I took her into Mary’s Place for some playtime and play she did!
People keep passing by my kennel. I guess I look like so many other shelter dogs.
Whenever a dog arrives at the shelter who isn’t a beauty or adorable or the perfect mix of preferred breeds, we take notice. It’s those dogs who volunteers often gravitate toward, get to know, and fall in love with. Such is the case with Elvee. Elvee came to WHS August 20, after her owner died. She is a six-year-old German Shepherd/Lab mix, and at 66 pounds, she’s a big girl. Elvee is quiet in her kennel and easy to pass over for potential adopters. But if they would just stop and get to know this easy-going, affectionate dog, they would be smitten. Elvee has lived happily with children (she is rated PG+8) and even cats! She gets along with male dogs, but should not go home with a female. She is house-trained and treat-motivated. Elvee is patiently waiting for her forever family to find her and take her home. Marianne and I decided to take her into Mary’s Place for some playtime on Sunday. Elvee was ecstatic! We’re hoping someone looking for their new best friend will realize Elvee is special.
This glass-is-half-full kind of happy boy is Frankie the Fantastic. He’s a little embarrassed by his name and would prefer to just be called Frankie. Frankie is a four-year-old Australian Cattle Dog mix. Francis took Frankie out to a big yard to run and run he did! Can you tell he was tuckered out when I took these pictures?
Frankie caught a cold, so is hanging out in the ISO kennels at the moment. Here he was today with Linda. He’s such a happy youngster.
Rocket is still waiting for his perfect fit of a person. Rocket is a three-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier mix, here with Christine.
Feta is a one-year-old Papillon mix, getting over a cold in ISO, here this afternoon with Marianne.
Tyrion is a new arrival and is an eight-year-old Lab mix here with Sandra today. He’s such a nice boy!
Sophie is another newbie. She’s a six-year-old Lab mix, here with Jolene today.
Patty/Minnie Pearl
Here was Patty when she was at WHS with Marianne. What a cutie!
I was so happy when I got this email a few days ago!
“Here’s an update on ‘Patty’ the little miniature poodle mix we adopted on August 12th. Her name has been changed to Minnie Pearl but we just call her Pearl.
She’s the best dog we’ve ever had! So quiet, friendly and mellow. Everyone loves Pearl and even our cat seems to accept her.
Here she is on one of our trips in the car, ready for the next adventure.
On the deck with Joe. Our concern about Pearl getting along with our 17-year-old cat, Gracie, quickly vanished. But every once in a while Gracie reminds Pearl who’s boss with a hiss and a swat!
Even Pearl got to experience the total eclipse of 2017 along with my husband Joe, me, and our friends from California.
Pearl makes eclipse glasses look glam!
Thank you for taking such good care of her and letting us adopt this wonderful little dog!”
On that very happy note, that’s it for this week!
Remember, if you see a dog on my blog whom you are interested in meeting, try to make arrangements to get to the Willamette Humane Society soon. Some dogs are adopted more quickly than you might think.

Minnie Pearl needs a hat!
