Dear Fellow Dog Lovers,

We had wonderful dog adoptions this week and WHS staff sent me both going-home and some at-home pictures!

Hank

How difficult is it to get a sixth-month-old Lab pup to look at the camera with his new family? These pictures say it all.

Take One

Take Two

Take Three

Finally!

Jazzy

Our sweet Jazzy got to go home with human siblings of her own!

Jethro

His new people were smitten the moment they met him.

And they sent us these pics of his ride home and relaxing in his new bed.

Molly

Can you tell these folks were over the moon when they met Molly?

They sent us these happy pictures from home. Her new family wrote, “We adopted sweet Molly on Friday afternoon. She is the most perfect little angel ever! My heart is completely taken by this precious little soul.”

The shelter continues adoptions by appointment only, as explained below.

The Adoption Process

WHS is keeping people safe while continuing to match dogs and cats with their perfect fits of families. WHS is open for adoption appointments 10:00 – 3:00 every day.

Adoptions Continue! But Your Patience Is Crucial

I like all the peeps here and they love me, but three times is enough. I’m really hoping that my next home will be my forever one!

Chico, a seven-year-old Shepherd mix, first arrived at WHS in January of 2018. He immediately became one of our favorites because of his affectionate and happy personality. Here are a couple of pictures with then-volunteer Caitlin.

Chico was adopted within a few weeks and we were thrilled. But in July of 2019, his family moved and couldn’t take him with them, so we welcomed him back. He was still the happy-go-lucky clown that we remembered. Here he was with Marianne, Megan, and Ayla.

He loved playing fetch and would bring the ball back, dropping it at our feet.

We spent time with him just relaxing in the yard. He had a great sense of humor.

As I wrote in my August 7, 2019 post, “He thinks his jokes are much funnier than we do.”

On June 6th, Chico was once again surrendered due to housing issues. When he arrived, he had lost a lot of hair due to chronic allergic dermatitis. This common condition occurs when an animal is allergic to things in its environment, including fleas, pollens, food and grasses. He had also been treated for it while at WHS in 2018. His coat has quickly improved with medication and diet. Since it is chronic, Chico’s adopters will need to monitor him and treat early signs of recurrence. With proper management, Chico will be just fine.

Here he was on Sunday.

Staff reports that Chico is just as lovable as ever. During his intake this time, staff wrote: “Very friendly. Treat-motivated and was very gentle when taking treats. Listens to basic commands when told. Walks great on leash, no issues, walked right into his kennel.”

Chico will need a feline-free home. Cats are just too much fun to chase. He has a great history with children and is rated for kids about eight and up. In his former home, if his young friends got too rambunctious, Chico would simply get up and leave the room. Chico loves everybody. He has never met a stranger he didn’t immediately like. Chico loves our shelter playgroups, and enjoys romping with his buddies. He can be a bit picky about his canine friends, so will need to meet any he would be living with and they need to be roughly his size. He is both house- and crate-trained. Chico does have a few fears—vacuums, hoses, and rakes. His former family reports that when home alone he just relaxes and does not bark or cause any destruction. They described him as a “gentle giant.” He doesn’t enjoy car rides and will whine, so he’s probably not a candidate for road trips. Chico still loves playing fetch, here he was on Sunday.

Chico hasn’t had a lot of stability in his seven years, being in three different homes. He’s really hoping that a new family will find him and he’ll never be homeless again. He will be a loyal, entertaining, and loving best friend.

Do you love road trips? So do I! We could start out by riding to your house!

Patches is an American Blue Heeler mix and is about seven years old. She was found lying in the middle of a road, seemingly waiting to see who might pick her up and take her home. Animal Control did, and brought her to WHS.

Patches quickly won over the staff. The intake folks wrote: “Very friendly, loves attention. Did not mind getting vaccinated or handled. Really socially motivated, didn’t try giving her treats since she was doing so well already. When walking her back to her kennel she walked well on leash, pulled a little, but came when asked and walked right into her kennel with no issues.”

Sometime in her past, Patches’ left front leg was injured and she has a limp. But don’t think for a minute that it slows her down! She loves to romp in play group. WHS Trainer Jessi reports, “Patches is very interested in the handlers. She will greet and allow greets with other dogs. She can mingle with both small and very active dogs. She gives good feedback to other dogs, too.”

Patches knows basic commands like “sit” and “stay,” though she does need a little practice on polite leash-walking. The officer who brought her in said she is “a great gal. She loves riding in cars, especially if she can stick her nose out the window.”

We do know that Patches needs a feline-free home. Because we don’t know her history with children, she is rated for kids about 13 and older.

Patches is affectionate, eager, and outgoing. She’s hoping for a home with a yard where she can play and a family who will love her.

Here she was with silly Baby in Sunday’s playgroup.

If Patches sounds like a perfect fit for your family, fill out the Adoption Questionnaire by clicking on the link “Ask About Patches” under her picture on the WHS adoptable dog page found here: https://whs4pets.org/adopt-a-pet/dogs-2/

I may be small, but I’ll love you just as much as a big dog!

Meet Captain, a one-year-old Dachshund mix who as cute as they come. Captain was found as a stray, so we don’t know much about him. During his shelter intake process, staff said he was “very friendly, solicits attention, socially motivated, treat-motivated. Pees a little when really excited. No noticeable handling sensitivities, was climbing into laps and rolling around. Very tolerant.” Because of his excellent behavior, Captain is rated for kids about five and older. Captain had a “cherry eye” (an inflamed tear gland, very common in dogs) when he arrived at WHS, which was surgically repaired when he was neutered, after these pictures were taken.

At only ten pounds, Captain has perfected the skill of lap-sitting. He has not met a single person at the shelter whom he didn’t love. In playgroup, he is shy around other dogs, but doesn’t seem afraid. He will need to meet any dog he will be going home with.

What does Captain love to play more than anything else? Fetch with himself! Watch!

Captain won’t be around the shelter long, I predict, and he can’t wait to meet his new family.

If Captain sounds like a perfect fit for your family, fill out the Adoption Questionnaire by clicking on the link “Ask About Captain” under his picture on the WHS adoptable dog page found here: https://whs4pets.org/adopt-a-pet/dogs-2/

Last week I told you about the very happy adoption of Stella. Here was her going-home picture. Sasha, the Adoptions Specialist who introduced these two, felt it was a great match. Turns out she was so right!

Staff got the following note from Stella’s new person:

“The amazing staff’s love, respect and caring for the dogs showed not only in how they spoke about them and interacted with the dogs but in the questions and time spent with me, a possible new adopter.

By taking the time to get to know me, my needs, and life, they helped me find the most amazing four-legged companion!

It’s only been five days but the two of us have fallen in sync with one another so completely, people have commented that we were meant for each other.”

With that very happy note, that’s it for this week!

Once again, I want to thank WHS Trainers Jessi and Nichole as well as other staff for getting pictures to me for this post!

All of the dogs I have featured today, along with other terrific dogs waiting to be adopted, can be found at Willamette Humane Society. Here is the link to the adoptable-dog page:

Dear Fellow Dog Lovers,

Once again this week Willamette Humane Society had some wonderful dog adoptions including Stella, here with her new person. Thanks to staff for sending me this happy going-home photo.

The shelter continues adoptions by appointment only, as explained below.

Got a tennis ball? Got a pool? Yes? We need to talk!

Banner is a beautiful two-year-old German Shepherd mix. At 70 pounds, he is a very athletic young dog whose favorite thing to do in the world is play fetch.

He not only returns the ball to you, but drops it at your feed and backs up, waiting for you to throw it again.

Banner is an extremely friendly, social dog. He loves people whether they are long-time friends or strangers he’s about to meet. He is smart, knows numerous commands, and likes to ride in the car. He loves being petted all over. He is house-trained and slept in his dog bed next to his person in his previous home. Banner does get excited with new people and places and knows he needs to work on not jumping for joy in his greetings. While he’s never lived with children, he has done well when they have visited and so is rated for kids about ten and older.

Banner enjoys our shelter playgroups. WHS Trainer Jessi writes, “He plays more ‘push pull,’ meaning he enjoys chase games with little physical contact. He can get overly excited, however, so will need to be monitored when playing with other dogs. He does tend to herd others, but takes feedback from them when it is too much, with Jethro for example.” And it’s not just other dogs he likes to herd—he has been known to chase both cows and cats, so no livestock or felines for this boy.

Banner will need a special home due to his amazing athletic ability to jump seven-foot fences!!

Besides playing fetch, Banner’s obsession is water. He LOVES hanging out in the pool. Here he was on Sunday with Jethro.

While Banner gets along with other dogs most of the time, he does tend to guard his food, so would need to be fed away from other dogs in the home. He is fine when left alone in the house.

Banner will need a family who will give him the exercise and supervision he needs to stay out of trouble. If you have a supply of tennis balls, a kiddie pool, and you want an enthusiastic, affectionate, athletic dog to match your active life style, Banner may be your new best buddy.

If Banner sounds like a perfect fit for your family, fill out the Adoption Questionnaire by clicking on the link “Ask About Banner” under his picture on the WHS adoptable dog page found here: https://whs4pets.org/adopt-a-pet/dogs-2/

Thank you to WHS staff members Jessi and Sasha for these great pictures!

We’re hoping that Banner will be adopted by next post. On that note, that’s it for this week!
