Dear Fellow Dog Lovers,

There were four wonderful adoptions at WHS this week. They show once again that there are dog lovers eager to adopt dogs who may have some challenges, but are so worth the effort.

 

 

Bobby

Our very active and joyful Bobby found his new people on Saturday. We are so happy that he is now enjoying the beginning of a exciting new life.

 

 

It always thrills us when senior dogs with serious health issues and who are hospice adoptions find their perfect last homes. And when TWO hospice dogs are adopted in the same week, like Danny and Buffy were, it is exceptional!

I’m excited to report that Buffy’s new person has already sent a happy update which will be at the end of this post.

 

 

 

April

If you are a regular reader of my posts, you know all about the Huskies who were rescued last September during Oregon’s wildfires. April, a senior eleven-year-old Siberian Husky mix, was one of them. We are thrilled that today this sweetheart found her forever home. WHS Trainer Jessi wrote a little while ago, “Oh! April is going home! She must have known this would be her day. She was so happy this morning in playgroup.”

 

 

 

And here is what WHS Trainer Nichole just wrote, “Our last wildfire Husky has been adopted! April was adopted by a wonderful retired couple. They have had Malamutes and Huskies in the past so they understand her breed. The husband was a musher and skijorer. The wife used to competitively show their Malamutes. April will have a Norweigan Elkhound as a roommate. The staff took turns saying their goodbyes (in between tears) to our sweet, snowy, shy girl.”

 

 

 

 

 

 

I know I’m a bit of a challenge, but I really am trying to learn to be a well-behaved family member. You could help me! We could work together!

Colby is a handsome young Lab mix who was surrendered mid-November because a child in the family was allergic to him. He is one year old and, at 55 pounds, he is a perfect medium-sized dog.

 

 

Colby is still very puppyish and the Behavior and Training Team has been spending lots of time with this youngster to help him learn manners and self-control. They report that he is smart, eager and absolutely loves training sessions where his mind and body are challenged. He would make a wonderful hiking or jogging partner and he would excel at dog sports such as agility and scent work. After a day of action, Colby would enjoy snuggling with his person in the evening; he is a very affectionate boy.

 

 

Colby much prefers human companionship to other animals and will need to be an only pet in the home. Because his youthful enthusiasm can lead him to be jumpy and mouthy, he will need a home with just adults or with teens.

Colby thrives on rewards-based training and the fact that he is extremely smart makes such training fun and gratifying for both him and his trainers.

Colby can be shy and fearful in new environments and has been known to jump over a five-foot fence when left by himself in a yard. He also can be very anxious when left alone and is afraid of loud noises such as vacuums. He will bark at strangers. These are issues that his adoption family will need to continue to work on so that Colby feels safe and relaxed in his new home until his true personality shines. Colby’s former family writes, “Colby is playful, energetic and loves attention. He knows basic commands and is treat-motivated. He loves to be petted all over. He is crate-trained.”

Colby is waiting for a patient and understanding family who will continue the rewards-based training he has been enjoying at WHS. He will take some effort and time, but what a wonderful family member this sweet boy will become given the love and patience he deserves.

Do you like to play fetch with frisbees? How about hiking? Agility? Those are my passions! If you like them, too, we could be great friends!

Look at this face! Broly is a one-year-old Border Collie/Australian Shepherd mix with striking crystal-blue eyes.

 

 

Broly was surrendered because his family moved and couldn’t take him with them. He has lived in the same home since he was twelve weeks old. His former family describes him as “super friendly, can be hyper. He knows several commands including ‘sit,’ ‘stay,’ and ‘come.'” He will bark at strangers, but stops when asked by his person. Broly was kenneled at night. He is house-trained and will whine at the door to go out.

Broly is the kind of dog who needs a job. Looking for someone to retrieve a frisbee? Look no further. WHS staff wrote, “During his morning walk it was pouring down rain and windy, but Broly rushed into the yard and picked up a frisbee. I tossed it poorly due to the wind, but he still ran after it and brought it back. Fetch is his jam!”

 

 

Broly needs a lot of positive-reward training in leash walking—he is a strong puller. He has never lived with another dog and is dog-selective, so will need to meet any with whom he would share a home. Because of his strength, he needs to go home with adults only or teens who could help in his training. He is very treat-motivated, so working with him will be fun not only for Broly, but his family as well. He will also be a quick study, as he is very smart and loves to learn new skills.

Broly is not a dog who can be left at home for long hours. He needs action and mental stimulation. He would excel in agility.

 

 

Broly is a young, enthusiastic dog who will be a loyal and delightful companion for a family with time, energy and patience. Two dogs who are available and have already been featured in my posts are still waiting for their perfect fits of families. If you are a new reader to my blog, I’d like to introduce Danika and Maxamillion.

 

 

Danika

I’ve been here before, a long time ago. I’m waiting for a new family, now. Maybe it’s yours?

I first wrote about Danika in my December 9th post. We were hoping she would have found her new family by now, but she hasn’t.

Danika is a bright, affectionate, and active dog. She would love a home with older children who could give her the exercise she needs playing fetch (which she loves). She would like going hiking, swimming, or camping. She will do her best to please people, especially if treats are involved.

Maxamillion

I’m young and eager to find my new home with an active, dog-savvy family.

Maxamillion is a beautiful White German Shepherd mix. At four years old, he is still a youngster at heart and eager for new adventures. Maxamillion is smart, eager, and very treat-motivated, all which make rewards-based training both successful and fun not only for Max, but his handler, too.

We have two wonderful updates to tell you about.

Buffy

I announced Buffy’s hospice adoption at the beginning of this post. I was thrilled to get this update about her wonderful new life.

“Here are a few pics of Buffy. She is such a sweetheart. She made herself at home immediately upon walking in the door. She learned right away where her food and water were and how to go to the sliding patio door to go into the fenced back yard to go potty. She never leaves my side. She got up on the bed with me the first night and never moved all night long. She is exactly what I was looking for. I will make an appointment with my vet this week to check her out. I am going to try to get in contact with the couple who adopted her brother. I would love to keep them connected.”

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Max

Remember Max, our sweet boy who needed to have his ACL repaired and was hoping for a new home where he could recover surrounded by love? We were so happy when such a family found him and took him home. And we just got this update!

“Max is doing well after his surgery yesterday. He is on good pain control, and the doctors at Carlton Vet were wonderful with him. He has one more laser treatment next week, and then Max and I will begin physical therapy.

We slept on the floor next to him last night because he was still groggy and confused from the anesthetic and pain meds. Max didn’t mind at all :). He was a little wary of his new orthopedic bed, but we were finally able to coax him on to it, and now he loves it! Attached is a picture of Max shortly after he got home last night, we took the cone off for just a few minutes while he settled into his bed.”

 

 

 

We are so thankful for dog lovers who adopt a dog with special needs and give it a wonderful life. Only they know the joys they receive in return.

Dear Fellow Dog Lovers,

Some weeks at WHS are extra happy because dogs who need something special in a home find it. This was such a week. We had four exciting adoptions.

 

 

Catarina

Catarina had been waiting for several weeks for just the right person to find her. She needed a quiet, child-free home and to be the only pet. Bingo!

 

 

 

 

Jasmine

Jasmine was adopted once, but the family quickly learned she could not live with cats and returned her. But on January 3rd, she found her perfect new peeps. Adoption Specialist Sasha reports that Jasmine fell instantly in love with her two boys. Happy new life, sweet girl!

 

 

 

Leo

Leo needed someone who understood Husky personalities and would be able to keep Leo challenged mentally and physically. WHS Trainer Nichole wrote, “The rain came down on us but Leo didn’t seem fazed by it. Leo was smitten with his new person from the moment he saw him! He’s going to keep Leo busy with activities like running, hiking, and camping.  Leo already took over the passenger front seat in his car! Happy new life handsome boy!”

 

 

 

 

Max

And finally, Max got the exact home that he so needed. You’ll remember that Max has a torn ACL and will be having surgery soon. He was hoping to find a home where he could rest before the surgery and recover afterward. He was adopted once, however, he could not manage the stairs to the couple’s apartment, so had to be returned. BUT! He found his absolutely perfect home! WHS Trainer Nichole writes, “Our big love bug, Max, was adopted! One of his new people is a vet tech. She also helps with physical therapy. Perfect match, right?!”

This is Max’s second time at WHS. He was surrendered in June of 2018 because his person worked too many hours and didn’t have the time to give Max the exercise he needed. Here he was then with volunteer Francis.

 

 

 

Max was adopted but was surrendered again recently. He started not getting along with the small dog in the house and needs more attention and training. Here he is during a recent winter photoshoot with WHS Trainers Nichole and Jessi. “Max was great for the photoshoot. He was interested in posing for us and took treats very softly with his mouth.”

 

 

Maxamillion is smart, eager, and very treat-motivated, all which make rewards-based training both successful and fun not only for Max, but his handler, too. His new person needs to be committed to teaching Max impulse control. When excited, this big boy can get jumpy and mouthy. His former family said he would dash out of an open door at times. (They would get in the car, drive around the block to meet him, open the car door and he would hop in.) He will need a yard with a six-foot fence. Max has lived with cats successfully, but is selective about his dog friends. He will need to meet any future housemates.

Max loves romping with his friends. WHS Trainer Jessi writes, “Max is selective, but when he makes a good play match, he runs all over the yard and will stop to wrestle with his buddies, also. He takes breaks to wander around the yard and mingle and is interested in interacting with people in the yard.”

He and Roxy are a great match for playing. They also enjoy chatting with each other. (You may remember a couple of these from last week when I featured Roxy.)

Because of Maxamillion’s size and exuberance, he will need to go to a home with older kids who will be able to help in his rewards-based training. He already knows “sit,””down,” and “stay.” He walks well on leash and is house-trained. His former family said he is a happy-go-lucky guy who thinks he’s a lap dog. When he needs to go out, he “will nudge you and run to the door.” Max can be quite vocal, barking at strangers, and so would not be a candidate for apartment living. He loves to chew on tennis balls.

 

 

 

In his former home, Max was diagnosed with hip dysplasia. While he does not show any signs of problems at this time, he may be predisposed to developing arthritis as he ages.

Looking for a fun-loving dog who will encourage you to get out and have adventures with him? Look no further than ME!

Bobby is a three-year-old mixed-breed boy who is the life of any party. He was found as a stray and the officer who brought him to WHS reported that he was “good on car rides, good in a kennel and appears house-trained.”

 

 

At 70 pounds, Bobby is a large dog and can be jumpy when excited. He knows “sit” and “down” on cue and relishes interactions with people.

Bobby’s favorite activity is playing with other big dogs. WHS Behavior and Training Manager Marilyn writes, “Bobby loves to run and play, having a blast in our playgroups with other large dogs and giving appropriate corrections when needed.” In fact, WHS Trainer Jessi wrote this about a recent session: “During playgroup Bobby attempted to get several of the dogs to play chase with him. First giving them play bows, then barking in their faces. When Jasmine entered the yard in a jumpy/direct approach, Bobby rolled her over and stood over her as if to say, ‘Cut that out!’ Last Sunday, Bobby played with Mia and Roxy. They would race around the yard, then “took breaks on their own and at times just wandered around the yard.” Watch!

Bobby became a star when he was invited to take part in Nichole and Jessi’s winter photo shoot. Jessi wrote, “Bobby came in and explored the photo area and was a great poser for pics with loose body and was friendly towards handlers. He’s very treat-motivated.”

While Bobby seems to get along with most of the dogs he’s met at the shelter, he will still need to meet any potential dogs he would be living with. Staff recommends that because of his size and energy he not go home with small dogs. And since we have no history of Bobby with cats or kids, he will need a feline-free home and older children.

Bobby is not a couch-potato kind of dog, and his family will need to provide lots of activities for both his physical and mental stimulation. He loves the shelter’s food puzzles (especially paper towel rolls stuffed with a mix of frozen wet food and kibble).

 

 

Here Bobby was this morning during playgroup. Such a happy dog!

I’m looking for a new family to love. Are you looking for a dog? We should meet!

Mia is a one-year-old Australian Shepherd/Lab mix who has won the hearts of everyone she’s met at the shelter since she arrived. She had been with her former family since she was eight weeks old, but circumstances changed in the home resulting in tension among the family’s three dogs. The owner travels a lot with work and did not have the time to deal with the issues, so decided it would be best for Mia to find her a new home.

 

 

From the time Mia arrived, she began collecting fans. The Intake staff wrote, “Mia solicited attention and was socially and treat-motivated. No problem getting on the scale. No issues fitting harness. Did not like shoulder being pinched before vaccine, but no issues during vaccine. Some jumping up, especially to look out window.”

Mia is thoroughly enjoying shelter playgroups. She is “very playful and social with all dogs in the yard. She was even able to mingle with the smaller dogs. No issues,” writes WHS Trainer, Jessi. She continues, “Mia was loose when entering yard and very playful once in. She joined in Rough & Rowdy play today more than I have seen in previous groups. She played a lot with Roxy, Bobby, and Milo.”

Mia has become best friends with Bobby. Here they were this morning in playgroup.

 

 

 

 

 

Mia’s former family described her as “happy, can be hyper when excited, friendly and affectionate. She had no problems with two cats at a friend’s house.” She has lived with children and gotten along fine.

 

 

Volunteer Marianne has spent quality time with Mia and says, “When first meeting Mia, she can be a little shy. However, she warms up quickly and is very sweet—she loves to lean in for pets. She walks well on leash and is learning to have better manners as far as jumping on people when she gets excited. She is smart and knows several commands. She is very treat-motivated and will be fun to train. I love her so much. She’s an amazing dog. I took her out twice today.”

 

 

Mia got to have a romp in playgroup today and she loved it!

 

 

 

Mia is hoping her new family will be active with walks and playtime followed by snuggling on the couch. She will need to meet any prospective dogs she’ll be living with to make sure their play styles are compatible.
