We had three dog adoptions since my last post, and they were terrific ones!

Mr. Wiggles

This was Mr. Wiggles’ second time at WHS. We’re hoping this will be his perfect fit of a forever home. And yes, his name fits him very well!

Loki

Yay!! Drum roll! Happy dance! Loki was adopted today! He finally met his perfect people and loved them instantly. We are over the moon for this boy who has waited since mid-October for his perfect family fit. Because of his “stranger danger” fear, he needed a special family who would help him learn the world doesn’t have to be a scary place. So glad he found one.

Macaroni

Our sweet, all-around great family dog went home today! He will be such a wonderful companion.

Please Note: The dogs I feature in this section are available for adoption as of today, November 17, 2021. But things change fast and our goal is always to find wonderful homes for our dogs as quickly as possible. To see if today’s dogs are still available and to see other available dogs, click on the link to the currently available dogs here.

Yep. It’s me. I’m still here. My shelter friends can’t believe it and neither can I. I know you are out there, New Family. I’ll be waiting.

I first wrote about Popcorn in my October 27th post.

It was such a fun feature to write because Popcorn is a hilarious character. We are amazed he has not been adopted yet. So, at his request, we decided to feature him again and yes, he also requested a movie.

Popcorn is a nine-year-old Catahoula Leopard/Welsh Corgi mix. He was surrendered because he became overwhelmed when two additional people with multiple dogs moved into his person’s house. Due to his resulting anxiety, we know he will be much happier as an only dog in the home. While he may be a bit timid at first meeting, he very quickly warms up and soon lets you know that he is a lap dog and a snuggler. If you are in search of a low-maintenance dog who will play for a while in his back yard, but is the most happy sitting next to you or on you on the couch, look no further. Here we were on Sunday in Mary’s Place. He spent his time going from Marianne to Linda to Megan and was so content.

Popcorn’s former family told us a lot about this clown of a dog. He is house-trained and will go to the door and scratch when he needs to go out. His favorite treats are peanut butter and bacon bits. Oh, and he also likes cheese bits.

Popcorn walks well on leash. His is afraid of sudden noises, hats, and face masks, although he is now used to staff and volunteers wearing masks at the shelter. He does not do well riding in the car—he gets carsick unless he is crated. Popcorn will need a feline-free home. He does fine when left alone in the house. Asked how they would describe Popcorn, his former family said, “loving, mellow, lazy, and needy.”

Popcorn doesn’t enjoy being in his kennel at the shelter and is reluctant to return to it after being out and about with his people.

We had such a fun time with him on Sunday. And he kept us laughing. As you can see, he was totally relaxed.

As promised, I made him a movie. I hope he likes. it.

If you are looking for an affectionate, clownish senior who will listen in rapt attention when you tell him about your day, fill out the Adoption Questionnaire by clicking on his picture and then on the link Adopt Me found on this page: https://whs4pets.org/dogs/. He is waiting for you.

I’m going to make a fantastic family dog. Everyone here at the shelter says so! You need to meet me!

Another dog who we are amazed hasn’t gotten adopted yet is Shadow, a one-year-old Terrier mix. She is such an active, fun, medium-sized girl who has won the hearts of everyone at the shelter.

Shadow was found as a stray and brought to WHS on October 21st. I was so sure she would be adopted quickly, I didn’t write a feature for her. However, she is still waiting for her new family, so on Sunday we spent lots of time with her and we all had great fun.

When she brought Shadow to WHS, the deputy wrote, “This gal was found at large. She is good on a leash (JUMPY) was great with the finder’s small children. She is a good car rider and has a gentle mouth.”

We don’t know anything about her history, but we have learned a lot about her during her stay at the shelter. The Intake staff wrote, “Shadow is friendly and likes the attention of people. Treat-motivated and knows basic commands, especially ‘down.’  Sensitive and wiggly for vaccines, but able to complete with treat distraction.”

Shadow likes other dogs and loves to play chase games, with her being the “chaser.” This could be a bit much for some dogs, so Shadow will need to meet any dog she will be living with to make sure their play styles are compatible.

A volunteer dog walker wrote, “Practiced fetch with a rope in the play yard, practiced having her drop it for a treat. She knows sit well, and down, too. She’s just very jumpy, but very smart!” Another volunteer reported, “She was excited to be outside and ran around a while, and she LOVES cuddles. After running, she calms down and wants lots of pets, love and attention.” We took her out to the big yard and she was thrilled, and happy to pose for my camera with Marianne.

She had fun running around and playing fetch.

Then we decided to spend some time with her in Mary’s Place, but Shadow had something she wanted to say on the way there.

Shadow LOVES being in Mary’s Place with her friends. She can be very cuddly.

After all the activity, she was ready to chill while we visited.

Shadow is hoping for an active family who wants a happy, playful, cuddly dog as a new family member. If she sounds like the right fit for your family, fill out the Adoption Questionnaire by clicking on her picture and then on the link Adopt Me found on this page: https://whs4pets.org/dogs/.

Canelo

Canelo is a two-year-old Australian Cattle Dog mix. Megan and I took him out to the big yard on Sunday and he loved it. On Tuesday Marianne took him out for his walk and sent me this: “Canelo is such a sweet dog. I took him out for his walk today, and he was really good on leash. He knows to sit when asked and takes treats very gently. Since we had extra time at the end of the shift, three of us took him into Mary’s Place. While he seems hesitant and somewhat nervous in his kennel, he is an extremely affectionate dog and loves being petted. He seeks attention and is very happy to be around humans.”

Cookie

Cookie is a two-year-old Boxer mix who is a wiggly, sweet, and highly food-motivated gal. She’ll need to be the only pet in the home. She’s looking for an active family, as she has a lot of youthful energy. She is affectionate and loves attention.

Crunch Wrap

Crunch Wrap is an absolutely delightful three-year-old thirteen-pound Chihuahua mix. He has so much spunk and is such a happy boy. And he enjoys posing for pictures! I have a feeling he won’t be at the shelter for long!

Vanilla/Damien

This is what I wrote about Vanilla in my October 20th post: “Vanilla is a tiny, eight-month-old Pekingese/Chihuahua mix puppy who is absolutely adorable. Here’s a picture WHS staff member Jean took of him recently as he tried his best to convince her to take him to her office.”

And this is what I wrote in my November 3rd post: “Vanilla didn’t stop with trying to get Jean to take him to her office. On Monday he convinced her to take him home. Never underestimate the determination of a shelter dog!” Vanilla was not for the faint-of-heart adopter. He came with some challenges that Jean has taken on with love, patience, and determination to help him.

Vanilla (now Damien) joined Jean’s elderly dog, Sinead. Sadly, Jean and her husband recently lost their much-loved Pug, Liam. Jean hoped that Damien would help Sinead in her grief about Liam. I was thrilled when I got this update last week.

Damien will do almost anything to be outside. We have bells by the doors that Liam and Sinead would ring to go out. Damien hasn’t caught onto that yet, but he thinks my ringing the bell means he can go out. No door dashing! He loves to watch the squirrels and birds out there and would stay out there all day (if I would stay out there too, of course). He often brings in sticks and things he finds outside, and he ends up looking like he’s smoking. 🙂

He also loves our twice-daily walks. He even enjoyed last week’s rain. He leaps into leaf piles, watches the squirrels, and has long sniffs. He is wary of strangers we see (especially if they have lawn equipment), but recovers in less than a minute and can walk away. He even let me talk with a neighbor while he was on a leash. He hid behind me, but still. No panicking, barking, or growling. Not so bad.

He and Sinead remain roommates, but not BFFs. They share toys and people nicely, and they get along. But this is not a love affair. However, Sinead is so perky now with a friend in the house. She remains super playful and awake, and that’s wonderful.

When he isn’t walking or playing, Damien likes a lap. He’s the cuddliest dog I have ever had, which is saying a lot. He also likes full-body hugs, which is so odd, given his handling sensitivity. But he’ll push his whole body at me and stop only when I have my arms around him. He also solicits many, many belly rubs.

We have our first class with Skylar at WHS after Thanksgiving, and then we’ll do a group class, too. I want him to see more strangers and strange dogs in safe spaces. I think it’ll help. I feel very lucky to have him, and doubly lucky that he trusts me to guide him into his new life. He has a lot to learn, but I am so thrilled that he already knows to run to me/hide behind me/ask me when he is unsure. That’s something we can build on!

On that happy update, that’s it for this week!

As always, many thanks to volunteers Marianne, Megan, and Linda for their help with this post. I couldn’t do it without them!

All of the dogs I have featured today, along with other terrific dogs waiting to be adopted, can be found at Willamette Humane Society. Here is the link to the adoptable-dog page:  https://whs4pets.org/dogs/.

Remember, if you see a dog on my blog whom you are interested in meeting, try to make arrangements to get to the Willamette Humane Society soon. Some dogs are adopted more quickly than you might think.
