Dear Fellow Dog Lovers,
It was hard to believe that it was nearly December when the temperature was almost 60° on Sunday. What a great day to spend outside with shelter dogs! Adoptions have slowed down with the holidays approaching and there was only one in the past week, but it was a very happy one.

Romeo
Huskies are sometimes a challenge to get adopted. They are big dogs and have a ton of energy to burn. They are not the right dog for every family. Romeo was found as a stray and became an instant favorite because of his cheerful disposition and his joy of romping in the play yards.
We thought he might be staying at the shelter for some time, but were happily proven wrong when on Friday a family came to meet him, bringing their young Husky with them. The meet went great and Romeo went home with a little sister.

Please Note: The dogs I feature in this section are available for adoption as of today, December 1, 2021. But things change fast and our goal is always to find wonderful homes for our dogs as quickly as possible. To see if today’s featured dogs are still available and to see other available dogs, click on the link to the currently available dogs here.
Do you play soccer? Need someone to practice with? I could be your Goalie, Center Back, Fullback, or Winger!
Luka is a one-year-old Border Collie mix who is an absolutely delightful, very energetic young dog. He came to us as a stray, but the people who found him kept him for a while and he got along with their dogs and cats. He enjoyed herding their ducks (he’s a Border Collie, after all!).

Because Luka was a stray, we know nothing about his past, however, we have learned some of his likes and dislikes while he’s been at the shelter. Luka is dog-selective, meaning he likes some dogs and not others, so he’ll have to meet any dog he would be living with. He also seems to be partly deaf, but does hear high-pitched sounds like squeaky toys. While he’s been quite stressed in his kennel, he has had many happy encounters with volunteers. Linda found him to be very affectionate!

On Sunday we took him out for more pictures, then to a yard to play. Megan loves him.

Here are some quotes from other volunteers who have spent time with Luka: “Very affectionate and loved an ear/head scratch.” “Today walked loose leash. Very affectionate. Loves pets and snuggles.” “Great boy! Very trainable! Pulls some, first curious, but listens and knows commands. Such a good pup!” “LOVES the blue and yellow ball in the turnout. Chases balls but doesn’t return. Very nice, smart, loving pup. Needs a job!”
Luka does indeed love the blue and yellow ball, and he seems to have experience playing soccer! Here he is with Marianne.

The only problem is, Luka can’t get a hold on the ball that he loves so much! So after racing after it, he puts a foot on it and waits for someone to come and throw it!

And then it begins again…

Linda decided to see what he would be like as a soccer player. It was hilarious!

Need someone to practice your soccer skills with? You found him!
Luka is looking for an active family who will enjoy an affectionate soccer player and be a loyal new best friend. If Luka sounds like the right fit for you, fill out the Adoption Questionnaire by clicking on his picture and then on the link Adopt Me found on this page: https://whs4pets.org/dogs/.

Not up for a youngster like Luka? Well, I’m looking for a quiet retirement home. Maybe yours?
Jet is a twelve-year-old Chihuahua mix who is looking for a new family with whom to spend his golden years. Jet was surrendered because his family moved.

Jet’s family had many good things to say about him at home. He has lived with another dog (although they at times had minor tiffs), cats, and children. Due to his age, he would do best with older children who would be gentle with him. He is house-trained, slept a lot, and his favorite place to nap was by his person’s side. His family described him as “independent, loving, snuggly, at times scared.” He does not like water, car rides, being carried, or left alone. Are you retired or work from home? Jet would love to keep you company. At the shelter Jet has been uneasy. It takes him a little time to warm up to a new friend, but once he does, he becomes affectionate and happy. He loves to spend time with his peeps in Mary’s Place, which we did on Sunday.

Jet is not picky about his treats and was interested in anything we might offer him.

He got quite cuddly.

He even had an opinion about my taking so many pictures.

And he did!

Jet came to WHS with the usual old-dog issues and had twelve teeth extracted, leaving him feeling much better. He is startled by sudden movements and will need his new family to be patient and to give him the space he needs to feel safe. Once he settles in, he will be a devoted companion. He isn’t young anymore, but he still has a lot of love to give. If you would like to be Jet’s retirement home, fill out the Adoption Questionnaire by clicking on his picture and then on the link Adopt Me found on this page: https://whs4pets.org/dogs/.

I had a few skin issues when I arrived at WHS, but I’m looking sooo much better! I’m ready for my new family now!
Cleo is a seven-year-old American Pit Bull Terrier mix. Her person was heartbroken to surrender her, but she was having to spend long hours crated due to his work schedule (she never had an accident) and he felt it was not fair to her. She arrived at the shelter with skin irritations but her coat has improved greatly with medication, which will go home with her.

Cleo has lived with a dog-savvy cat. She tried to chase it, but was swatted and respected the cat from that time forward. She has also lived with children, but she is an exuberant girl and would accidentally knock into them, so a home with older kids would be perfect for Cleo.
Cleo is dog-selective and will need to meet any dog she will be living with to make sure their play styles are compatible. She does well at the vet’s office, happy and eager for their attention. Amazingly, even with spending hours in a crate, she never destroyed her bedding or tried to escape, just just waited for her person to come home. She is fearful of loud noises and the vacuum. She has been in her former home for three years after being adopted from another shelter. She is hoping that her next family will be her forever one. She is not a bit handling-sensitive and can be touched anywhere. She doesn’t even mind having her nails trimmed. She is nervous when riding in a car. She is friendly to everyone she meets.
On Sunday we decided to see how she would play in a yard. We were not disappointed. She was a hoot to watch dashing around us.

Watching her run made us all laugh. While she loves to race after a tennis ball, she isn’t great about bringing it back.

After some intense racing, she was ready for some petting.

Then it was time for some relaxation in Mary’s Place.

But it wasn’t long before Cleo wanted to play again.

She did get tired, however, and settled down with a toy.

Cleo will bring happiness and action to a lucky family. If you think it could be yours, fill out the Adoption Questionnaire by clicking on her picture and then on the link Adopt Me found on this page: https://whs4pets.org/dogs/.

Hobz
Hobz is a three-year-old Pit Bull Terrier mix. He was surrendered because his family is moving. This boy is a gentle giant. When he arrived at WHS, he weighed a hefty 133 pounds and was instantly put on a weight-loss plan. Marianne weighed him on Tuesday and I’m thrilled to report that he has lost six pounds! He is already feeling better and has more energy.

Everyone who meets Hobz falls for him. He is so easygoing and mellow. He’ll need to stay on a diet for quite some time to get to a healthy weight. But already he is more active and playing. Here are some pictures from when we spent some quality time with him. If he isn’t adopted first, I’ll feature him in next week’s post.

Marianne wrote on Tuesday, “It’s going to be so much fun for some lucky family to help Hobz get into shape and watch him become the amazing dog he’s meant to be. He actually hopped a couple of times when I walked him today. We spent quite a while in Mary’s Place with him and he is so loving.”

Meatball
Remember Meatball, the goofy big-headed clown?
He was adopted once and returned when it wasn’t the right fit. We worried about how long he would have to wait for another home. We were thrilled when he again went home with his perfect person.

This week we got the wonderful news that “Meatball is doing amazing in his new home. He is just such a big baby.” And they sent pictures to prove it!

And on that very happy note, that’s it for this week!
As always, many thanks to Adoption Specialist Sasha, and volunteers Marianne, Megan, and Linda for their help with this post. I couldn’t do it without them!
