Dear Fellow Dog Lovers,

This week’s post will feature three terrific dogs who are available and who will bring much joy to their future families. We’re hoping they won’t have to wait much longer for their new homes. Maybe one of them will spark an interest in YOU!

But before this week’s features, there are two very happy adoptions to report since my last post.

BeeBee

This good girl was adopted again! The first time, we quickly learned that she needed a cat-free home, as felines are just too tempting to chase, so she was returned to us. But she didn’t have to wait long for her just-right peeps. Here she is about to leave the shelter to begin her new life.

Sheldon

If you read last week’s post, you no doubt were touched by the story of our senior boy, Sheldon, a nine-year-old Lab mix. Well, you weren’t the only one. A couple who regularly reads my posts read Sheldon’s feature and fell in love. On Sunday they came and adopted him.

But Sheldon isn’t their first senior adoption. They told Adoption Specialist Sasha that in July of 2019 they read my feature of another senior dog, ten-year-old Johnny. He had come all the way from Maui Humane Society to find a retirement home in Oregon. I happened to be at the shelter the day they came and adopted him, and I took their pictures for my next post.

It takes a special kind of person to adopt a senior dog, let alone do it more than once, not knowing how long their time together will be. We are so glad that both Johnny and Sheldon found their loving forever home.

I’m still a youngster and have some stuff yet to learn, and I know I forget how big I am sometimes. But if you give me guidance and love, I promise you won’t be sorry!

JayJay is a one-year-old Shepherd mix who, along with BeeBee, was found as a stray. He misses BeeBee since she’s been adopted and hopes that he will be going to his new home soon, too.

JayJay is a big, lovable, 88-pound character who has not had a lot of training. He has been working on his manners since coming to WHS and most of the time remembers most of them. He is looking for a big-dog savvy family who will continue his rewards-based lessons and who will take him on adventures with them. JayJay is affectionate and can be very relaxed around his friends like Linda and Megan.

He was quite a conversationalist during this part of his photoshoot.

JayJay would do better with older children due to his size and youthful exuberance. He has improved in walking politely on leash, but can still become jumpy and mouthy when excited. He was best friends with BeeBee, but can be selective about other dog friends. He is very treat-motivated and eager to learn, so training will be rewarding and fun for both JayJay and his new family. Being young and athletic, he can jump fences, so a secure yard will be important.

On Sunday we took him into Mary’s Place to see if he would relax and he did. He took treats politely and did well with cues to sit and lie down. He was very cooperative in posing for my camera.

Linda worked with him on the “look” cue and he did well, though was a little confused at first.

Are you a “hound person”? You know who you are. Can we talk?

The first time I met Rock, he seemed nervous and worried. Here he was with WHS Trainer Karla soon after he arrived at WHS.

Although he was cooperative for his pictures, he was not enjoying our time together.

But a week later it was a totally different story. Rock had settled in and his delightful personality had blossomed. Megan became an instant fan, as we all did.

The first thing you need to know about Rock is that he is a Hound/Alaskan Malamute mix. At four years old, he is still full of energy and ready for adventure. His former family loved him and he was very happy living on their property outside of town where he could romp. However, when the family moved to a smaller place in town and didn’t have as much time for Rock, he had a difficult time adjusting. His family wrote, “Rock wants to be more active than there is room for now, so sometimes he lies around seemingly depressed. He is happy when he’s around people, and wants to play.” Rock took matters into his own paws and went on adventures by repeatedly jumping his six-foot fence and following his nose around town—remember, he is a Hound. He will need space to run and a secure yard where he will be supervised when outside. Rock has never met a stranger, doesn’t bark at them, and is delighted to make a new friend. He gets along well with other dogs. While he has lived with a dog-savvy cat, he can get pushy in play with them. What does Rock enjoy doing outside? We found out when we took him to a yard to play.

Rock loves to race around the yard. He will play fetch, but doesn’t always return the ball as he is easily distracted—did I mention he is a Hound? Rock has been working on loose-leash walking manners and is improving since he loves to work for treats.

But it was when we took Rock into Mary’s Place that we fully realized what a terrific dog he is. He so enjoyed being with us and kept us laughing with his antics.

The picture below made me laugh out loud. It’s obvious that Rock does not have a thorough understanding of personal space—or how long he is!

There are those moments when even the photo team can get distracted.

Rock is a goofy, wonderful dog who will bring his future family many laughs and much affection. He simply loves being with his friends.

Are you looking for a no-drama kind of girl? That’s ME!

Lindsay is a six-year-old Lab/German Shepherd mix who is looking for a new home because her person’s health made it necessary for him to surrender her to us. She seems a little lost at the shelter, but what a sweetheart she is, with her signature one-ear-down-one-ear-up fashion statement.

Lindsay is just about the perfect indoor dog. She is quiet and calm inside except if she hears food drop—then she makes a beeline for the kitchen to see if it’s for her. Lindsay doesn’t like to talk about it, but she does need to shed some of those pesky mid-life pounds. Taking walks and fewer treats will help to trim her down to a healthier weight.

Her former person had many good things to say about Lindsay. She is not a “chewer” and isn’t really interested in playing with toys. She’d rather be with her people. She loves kids and has lived happily with children ages three and older. She gets along with other dogs, even small ones, but will playfully chase a cat. She is house-trained (stands at the door and is “antsy”). Lindsay is very quiet and will not bark in the house. She loves everyone, even strangers. And belly rubs? They are the best thing ever! Lindsay is crate-trained and slept in one at night in her former home. She does pull some on leash, but when reminded to mind her manners, she does better.

Since being at WHS, Lindsay has made many friends who enjoy her calm and polite demeanor. On Sunday we spent some quality time with her and all of us enjoyed her no-drama style.

In the spirit of full disclosure, you need to know that Lindsay will need frequent brushing, as she does have a heavy coat. But that will be great bonding time for the two of you.

After some outdoor time, we settled into Mary’s Place and she loved it.

Meliodas

I’ve written about Meliodas four times since his arrival at WHS and yet his perfect family has not found him. Meliodas (Melly to his friends) is a Border Collie mix and is two years old. He was surrendered because he has a few quirks and will need a family willing to give him space when he needs it, cuddle time when he asks for it, and lots of exercise. He is a Border Collie mix, after all! We decided to make him another movie showing how cuddly he is, and he is cuddly!

Laguna

I’m only adding Laguna to this post to give you a puppy fix. She just became available and I’m sure she’ll be gone in a nanosecond. We had so much fun with her on Sunday. What a hoot! We hope whoever adopts her will be up to the challenge of raising a puppy! She’s a three-month-old Terrier mix. She already has so many applications, she is off the website!

Nope, there aren’t many things that are as cute as a pup!
