Dear Fellow Dog Lovers,
It’s been a busy June at the OHS-Salem Campus with many adoptions of both cats and dogs. Last week was no exception. Here are the adoptions since my last post.

Shadow
Our boy was adopted once again and THIS time we think it’s his perfect home!

Starfish
This big puppy was such a nice boy. Glad he’s in his home now.

Ginger
This active girl was getting stressed at the shelter, we are so happy she’s with her new family now.

Maya
Our sweet Maya went home with her new family. Thanks for the going-home picture, Amanda!

Darla
Darla, a senior, was adopted. She seemed sad at the shelter, so glad she’s now in her new home.

Rory
Rory, a shy youngster at six months. Such an adorable pup!

Wynnie
We were sure she’d be scooped up quickly and so glad she was! She is such a delightful girl.

Buzz
This adorable six-month-old puppy will be so much fun for his new family!

Ferris
Ferris was a new arrival and happily found his new person today. Thanks for the going-home picture, Mackenzie!

Please Note: The dogs I feature in this section are available for adoption as of today, June 28, 2023. But things change fast and our goal is always to find wonderful homes for our dogs as quickly as possible. To see if today’s featured dogs are still available and to see other available dogs, click on the link to the currently available dogs here.
“The shelter is open for walk-through viewing and meet-and-greets 10 AM – 7 PM seven days per week. Meet-and-greets are done on a first-come/first-served basis. The shelter address is 4246 Turner Rd. SE, Salem.
When you come to the shelter and see a pet you are interested in meeting, please take note of the pet’s name and visit the front desk in the lobby. Our Customer Care team will be happy to assist you with the next steps.”
Do you have a fenced back yard and no dog to play in it? Well, you’ve come to the right dog!
Marley is a three-year-old Pointer mix with a love of romping in a yard and playing fetch with his peeps.

Marley was surrendered because his family was moving and couldn’t take him with them. But they had many good things to say about this fabulous boy. “Marly is affectionate and playful. He is so sweet but has tremendous energy and really needs a yard to run in. He knows the cues sit, stay, down and wait.” He is house-trained and had free roam of the house when his family was gone. He has a rough and tumble play style with other dogs, so would need to meet any dog he might be living with to make sure they are compatible.
The intake staff were impressed when they processed Marley on his arrival on June 7th. “Marley soliciting attention, wiggly and giving tail wags. Very treat-motivated and smart! Knows sit, down, wait, paw. He waited at doors before exiting them, sat patiently for his food, and played with a tennis ball (dropped the ball in my lap for me to throw it). Walks in and out easily, quiet in the kennel. Nice on leash, pulls slightly, but redirects. Waits at the doors for you. Loves food! Will dance (taps his feet) for treats!”
We were sure Marley would be adopted quickly, but that hasn’t happened, so we decided to feature him this week. We had spent a lot of time with him a couple of weeks ago and I’d taken a lot of pictures. Knowing how much he loves to romp, we had first taken him into a yard. He had a blast!

He instantly decided he really liked the green squeaky toy the best.

After several games, it was time to relax.

Then we went into Mary’s Place. He loved it in there, too. First he played. He loved the stuffies.

The GFB (Giant Fluff Ball) was a hit.

Then he was cooperative for some posing.

Before Marianne took him back to his kennel, we took a few more pictures outside. He was so cooperative.
On Tuesday Marianne spent more time with him and wrote this: “He walks great on leash and what a sweet boy. Not a fan of tennis balls really but loved to chase the squeaky toy I threw him in the play yard.”

If you love happy, playful dogs and have a fenced yard, come to the shelter and meet Marley. You won’t be sorry.

I know I have some things I need to work on, but you could help me and we could be a team! I’ll do my very best!
The first time I met Elliott, soon after he arrived at the shelter on March 30th, he was very stoic and although he was cooperative, he seemed quite sad. Little did we know then what a goofy boy was underneath his serious exterior.

Elliott is a one-year-old Pointer mix, like Marley. He had been found as a stray and transferred to us from a near-by shelter. He was adopted once, but returned when the family decided he needed more training than they could give him. Elliott is still a youngster, and has not been taught some basic manners. He is hoping that there is a family with the patience and time to help him become the wonderful family dog that he wants to be. Through rewards-based training, Elliott will learn quickly, as he is an eager student. He needs to learn to walk politely on leash, rather than pull, and what is okay to chew, and what is not. He also needs help in house-training. He would love to attend some training classes at the shelter which would also be bonding time for him and his new person.
Yes, Elliott has a few issues which some adopters shy away from. But for the right family, Elliott will be so worth the effort. He has won the hearts of volunteers. Many mentioned his pulling while walking, but they also said many good things. One wrote, “Once in the yard he got the zoomies, was being silly, goofy, and playing fetch. He also began playing with his leash quite a bit but was easily redirected with treats to drop it and then he would play with a ball.” Another commented, “He lay across my foot with paws over my shoes. Really liked scratching around the neck. Even when I stopped he would gently nudge my hand to continue.”
Marianne and I spent some quality time with him on Sunday in Mary’s Place, and we were both smitten when his goofy personality started to shine through. He loved playing with the plush toys, especially the monkey and the GFB. And he loved to play while on the couch.

We were amazed at Elliott’s ability to get into many hilarious positions.

And then it was time for Elliott to show Marianne his appreciation for spending time with him.

He also had a word for potential adopters.

If your family is looking for a dog who may need some extra time and effort, but who will be a devoted friend, come to the shelter and ask to meet Elliott.

I’ve been featured before, but I’m still here and my shelter friends don’t know why. Neither do I. Maybe you’ll come to take me home this week?
Sadie was found as a stray and is still a youngster at about a year old. She is a Pit Bull Terrier mix. At 50 pounds, she is medium sized, just perfect as an active family member. She loves people and has become a volunteer favorite. I was smitten with her the moment I met her because of her trusting eyes and sweet smile.

She is eager to please, and has been improving her leash skills (they needed improving!). Here are some comments from dog walkers: “Sadie walked great, not that much pulling, no reactivity toward other dogs.” “This girl LOVES to run. Plays fetch and is very sweet.” “Took Sadie to the yard and she loved it! Did lots of zoomies and loves the squeaky Kong toy.” “A true sweetheart. Prefers walking in the middle of the field rather than the track.”
Kyra, an OHS Animal Care Technician, has taken Sadie on several outings to give her a respite from the stresses of shelter life. Kyra wrote this about her most recent adventure: “Took Sadie to the park again this afternoon. She was much more relaxed and willing in the car ride to the park. When we got to the park, she did a lot less pulling than the first time and had more confidence going into the water. Sadie was much more engaged with me than the last time. She loved exploring and had a wonderful break from her kennel. She was relaxed on the way home.”

On Sunday, we took Sadie out to a yard and she was excited.

In case you are wondering if Sadie is treat-motivated…

Sadie isn’t a huge fan of playing fetch which we discovered when I tried to video her in action. She will excitedly run after a ball, but… Last week volunteer Lori sent me a video clip of Sadie in the kiddie pool which she loves. I put the two clips together so you can see Sadie in action.
After her yard romp, we went to Mary’s Place to relax.

Sadie is hoping her new family will come and adopt her soon. So are we.
If you think Sadie would be a good fit for you, come to the shelter to spend some time with this volunteer favorite.

Oh my goodness! This just in…

That’s it for this week!
As always, thanks to my photo team volunteers Marianne, Megan, Linda, Kate, Lori, and staff member Kyra.
All of the dogs I have featured today, along with other terrific dogs waiting to be adopted, can be found at Oregon Humane Society Salem Campus at this link.
Remember, if you see a dog on my blog whom you are interested in meeting, try to make arrangements to get to the shelter soon. Some dogs are adopted more quickly than you might think.
