Dear Fellow Dog Lovers,

Emma asked me to start out this week’s post with a special message from all of the dogs currently awaiting their forever homes.

Page_3Emma is a Pit Bull Terrier mix who has been waiting patiently for her new people to find her since arriving from California on September 13. Before that she spent four months in another shelter. She has become a staff and volunteer favorite and we all hope she’ll find her perfect home before Christmas.

Last Sunday was a busy day at WHS for me. First was play group and then there were 17 new dogs to photograph for the website! It’s always fun to spend some time with new arrivals. Seven of them were new dogs that S.T.A.R.T. brought to us from California. I’ll be introducing some of them to you in this post.

But first, there are some great Blog Dog adoptions to report.

Page_3Page_2Page_1Page_4Staff sent me this photo of McTwist with his new family. I think he’s going to be very well taken care of!

Play group was active with big and little dogs in their respective yards. Molly, a four-year-old Australian Shepherd/Australian Cattle Dog mix, spent some time hanging out on the platform with volunteer Bill. She’s a happy girl!

Page_4 2

This is the usual scene whenever another dog arrives at play group.

Page_3 2

Volunteer Karen has joined our play group “staff” and brought Tanner (you may remember him as Rockstar) along to help. We were all so happy to see this WHS alumnus again. He made it clear that he wasn’t staying, just stopping by.

Page_7Meanwhile, in the little dog yard, the Beagles decided they were the bosses and announced their decision to Jeff.

Page_6It seemed that Beagles were everywhere! We currently have five of these fun little characters waiting for new families. They were the stars of play group!

Page_2 2Will didn’t give up, however. He decided to out-Beagle the Beagles!

Page_8He even had some news for Hunter.

Page_5Before I get into this post’s featured dogs for the week, I want to ask my readers a big favor that could help win the animals at Willamette Humane Society a whopping $2,000! All you have to do is text “GIVE4” to 444222 once a day until December 15! Each text is actually a vote for our Christmas tree located at Salem Center. Today I went to the mall to take a picture of our spectacular tree. Many volunteers had fun making the decorations and the result is amazing!

I met a lot of great new dogs on Sunday who can’t wait to be found by their forever families.

Looking for a dog to match your active lifestyle? That’s ME!

This is Kratos, a nine-month-old Australian Shepherd/Boxer mix who has it all. He is house-trained, and he has lived with two other dogs as well as children. However, he has a strong dislike of cats, so needs a feline-free home. Bruce fell in love with this handsome boy on the spot. He walks well on leash and took my treats politely. He’s going to be someone’s new very best friend.

DSCN1188

Want to add a little spice to your life?

This little sweetheart is Clove. He is a two-year-old Chihuahua mix who is a very calm, slightly shy boy. He warmed up to Sarah almost immediately and loved sitting in her lap. He likes hot dog bits and being carried. If you’re looking for a cuddling buddy, an affectionate little friend, Clove may be the boy for you!

DSCN1300Page_2

I really am this happy! All the time!

Meet Molly, a four-year-old Australian Shepherd/Australian Cattle Dog mix. This girl is always smiling! She has a lot of energy and would be a great jogging or hiking partner. She has lived with kids before, but she is very lively, so would need dog-savvy youngsters. Wendy really enjoyed spending time with this eager young girl.

DSCN1172 - Version 2

Look at my face. Do I touch your heart?

Some dogs I fall in love with at first look. Yep, Louise is one of those dogs. She is a California S.T.A.R.T. dog who is a one-year-old Pit Bull Terrier mix. Louise has come a long way since arriving at WHS a few days ago. At that time she trembled in her kennel and had to be coaxed to go outside. Each day she has become more trusting, and today she actually was sitting at the front of her kennel, tail wagging, hoping I’d brought treats. Although she is quite shy, she warms up quickly, as she did with Sarah on Sunday. Her adoption includes a Shy Dog class to assist her new family learn how to help her gain more confidence. Yes, her eyes go straight to your heart.

DSCN1424DSCN1426Louise would like to remind you…

Page_2

Hi! I’m another S.T.A.R.T. dog from California! But now I’m an Oregon girl looking for a family to love!

Daisey is a three-year-old Terrier mix who is absolutely adorable. Sarah and I both fell for her as soon as she posed for this picture. She is ten pounds, likes to romp, and loves attention. I have a feeling she’ll find her new people very quickly!

DSCN1392

I’m the new guy. My name is Bear.

When I arrived at the shelter today, I was looking forward to meeting Bear, a six-year-old Australian Shepherd/Great Pyrenees mix. Steve spent time with him today and reported that Bear is anxious about being in the shelter. He will need a family who will be patient with him, as he is nervous around new things. He will also need active people since he will be quite energetic. Bear knows some commands and happily sat for my hot dog bits and enjoyed both Steve’s and my attention. He is a very handsome boy!

DSCN1600 DSCN1621

I have to wear the dreaded cone. Does my face make you feel sorry for me?

Poor little Alpaca is a three-year-old Poodle mix who also is a S.T.A.R.T. arrival. Having just been neutered, he has to wear a cone and he is not a bit happy about it. He was quite annoyed when a treat I tried to give him dropped into the cone and was unreachable for him. However, he enjoyed being in Joan’s lap, even with the cone. Alpaca would like a quiet home with a family who will give him lots of love.

DSCN1626

Do I really look like a baby seal? I think not!

When I saw Taz in the puppy room today, I had to smile. What a cute little guy he is! Taz is a three-year-old Lhasa Apso mix. He is a little shy at first meeting, but he soon had Deb wrapped around his little paw. He is a little chunky, and would like to go for walks around the neighborhood to lose those few extra pounds. He does well with kids. What a cutie!

DSCN1651I had to laugh when I saw Taz loving Debbie’s scratches.

Page_2

I have a new family! I’ll be going home soon!

Meet Wizard, a one-year-old Terrier mix and another S.T.A.R.T. dog starting a new life. I was thrilled when one of my blog readers wrote to tell me they are adopting this little guy as soon as he is neutered. I hope to hear updates about him! Here he is with Wendy soon after he arrived at WHS. Wizard is a delightful little fellow and he has a wonderful life ahead of him!

DSCN0729

My name is Jump. I’d like to hop in your car and go home with you!

The last dog I want to introduce today is little Jump, a one-year-old Jack Russell Terrier mix. He came to us as a stray, so we don’t know much about him, but Sarah and I were amazed at his calm demeanor when we met him for the first time on Sunday. He loved my hot dog bits and took them gently. He knows some commands and enjoyed just sitting with us and visiting. We’re hoping a Jack Russell person will see this little guy and take him home.

DSCN1262 DSCN1265

Toward the end of my shift, I saw a man walking his dog. He wished me a Happy Thanksgiving, then introduced me to his dog, Daisey, whom he adopted from WHS in 2010. It was obvious that he loved Daisey very much. I asked if I could snap a picture for my blog and they happily agreed.

DSCN1662That’s it for this week…except for this reminder from our current Daisey.

Page_3

Remember, if you see a dog on my blog whom you are interested in meeting, try to make arrangements to get to the Willamette Humane Society soon. Some dogs are adopted more quickly than you might think.

Dear Fellow Dog Lovers,

Sit back and get ready for a lot of wonderful news! I have reported many, many happy adoptions since I started writing this blog. But every so often there is a Spectacular Adoption that I am thrilled to report. These are dogs who for various reasons have been at the shelter an extra-long time or have challenges that make finding the perfect home more difficult. On Sunday, I got to witness a Spectacular Adoption—Gilbert’s! Gilbert came to WHS last December as a stray. He had been hit by a car and had a fractured shoulder. After undergoing surgery, he spent his recovery time and the months since in foster care with a wonderful volunteer, Jolene. She worked tirelessly with this “bull in a china shop” love bug while waiting and waiting for the right family to come along. On Sunday, Gilbert finally spent his first night in his very own home with his new family. I was so glad that I was there to take this picture of Gilbert and Jolene with his new people. We will all miss you, Gilly, especially Jolene, but our tears are ones of joy for you.

DSC_0045Last week I reported Faye’s Spectacular Adoption. But while I took a picture of the new family, I promised not to post it until I found out that the adoption was working and that Faye had settled in. Yesterday I got the following email from the family.

“Faye (now Roxy) and our other dog Peewee are great buddies. Between my husband and I we have 5 kids and she absolutely loves having kids around too. She sleeps with the kids and keeps watch over them like they are her kids. She is doing great and is well loved already! We will definitely keep her!!”

So many of us at the shelter have loved Gilbert and Faye for such a long time. We are feeling pretty darn happy this week!

Faye's family

Then there was this very happy adoption on Sunday, as well. Although Kewpie wasn’t at WHS for an extra-long time, she quickly worked her way into so many of our hearts. Her new little girl was just bursting with excitement, as you can see in this photo.

DSCN0748 And I love this shot of them leaving the shelter with all kinds of supplies for their new best friend!

DSCN0757I want to tell you about one more special WHS adoption this week. I’m always thrilled when someone contacts me after seeing a dog in one of my posts, is interested in meeting the dog, and then adopts it. This was the case last week with Jasmine. We were worried about this shy girl and how she was dealing with the stress of the kennels. Here she was looking worried.

JasmineAnd here she is in her new home. This is what her new person emailed me. “She is doing great. Handles my cats very well and has really made herself at home.”

Jasmine at home2

This next announcement is a first for my blog, as it’s not actually a WHS adoption. Many of you will remember Jax, who arrived at WHS in June. He was a favorite of volunteers and staff and we worked hard helping him to become more adoptable, but the right family didn’t come along. A couple of weeks ago he was transferred to one of our shelter friends, Family Dog New Life Shelter, in the hope that he would find his perfect forever people there. Today we got the news that Jax has been adopted! We are so happy for this young, exuberant boy, and wish him the best life ever! Faye and Jax were best buds at WHS, and here is my favorite picture of them together. Such great outcomes for both of these special dogs!

Faye and Jax - Version 2

We had many more Blog Dog adoptions during the last week. Here they all are.

Chatter

We had a great play group session on Sunday with some romping, some resting, and some conversation.

Page_1
We have several adoptable Beagles at the moment!

Page_2

Staff member Kirsten spent some time with little McTwist.

Page_3

Kewpie couldn’t wait to get under the platform again!

This game is called “Where’s Kewpie?”

Page_5

Little Chauncey is still waiting for his forever home and he can’t quite believe it.

Page_6 But Kewpie tried to cheer him up.

Page_7

On the way back to the kennels after play group, I couldn’t resist this shot of Kirsten with McTwist and Alpaca.

Page_8

My name is Oso. Do I have a face you could love? Yes, I do!

Sunday afternoon I had some new dogs to photograph and what a gem I started with! This is a new S.T.A.R.T. dog, Oso, a two-year-old Chow Chow/Newfoundland mix. I found him hanging out in the office of Jennifer Kaser, our shelter director. We went outside for pictures. Jen reported that Oso was perfectly behaved in her office. He also walks well on leash, takes treats politely, and…drum roll…when we went back into the administrative offices, Oso came face-to-face with Buster, the office cat. What happened? Absolutely nothing. The two sniffed noses and walked on. Amazing! Oso is temporarily in a foster home at the moment and Karla, his foster mom, says he could make a great family dog. This boy won’t be around long! Look at that face!

DSC_0015Later in the afternoon, Sarah spent some time with him.

DSCN0700And I love this shot!

Oso

Don’t mind my cone, I’ll have it off very soon!

Maggie is a five-year-old Australian Cattle Dog mix. She has been at the shelter for several weeks and is anxious to have a real home. She would like to be an only dog and would love an active family so she can go for long walks and then snuggle in the evening. She doesn’t care for pesky cats and would like a fenced yard. Maggie thoroughly enjoyed spending time with volunteers Kyah and Ashley on Sunday.

Maggie and Kyah and AshleyHere she is today with new volunteer Keri. Her cone is a little worse for wear, but she’s still a happy girl!

DSCN0988

Still here…still hoping…still waiting.

The first dog I wanted to see when I got to the shelter today was sweet Emma. Trish was just taking her out, so I went with them to get some pictures. Emma is a three-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier mix who has been at WHS since September 13th. She’s not big on smiling, but is a very happy girl, especially when she’s playing fetch.

DSCN0786

DSCN0794 DSCN0792

Here she is excitedly waiting for me to throw the ball.

DSCN0801I had some fun news to tell Emma. On Friday I’m helping with a group of school kids who will be visiting the shelter. Emma will be my teaching assistant when we talk about meeting dogs and dog safety. She will be a terrific helper!

November is Adopt A Senior Pet Month! How about ME?

One of our new dogs this week is this beauty, Shady Dame, a German Shepherd/Collie mix who is eight years old. Joan took her out today and loved her. Shady is a gentle, shy girl, unsure why she is at the shelter. She walks well on leash and was very polite taking my hot dog bits. This sweetheart would like a quiet home, leisurely walks around the neighborhood, and curling up at your feet in the evening. What a keeper!

DSCN0862DSCN0891

Emelynn’s Pick of the Week!

Emelynn’s favorite this week is Oliver, a two-year-old Jack Russell/Shih Tzu mix. She reports he loves attention and to cuddle, he walks well on leash, and is simply a delightful little boy. With his one-ear-up and one-ear-down look, he’s a pretty cute little guy, and he really liked his time with Emelynn.

DSCN0834 DSCN0831DSCN0937 DSCN0933

Yep, we’re another bonded pair of Beagles!

Today Trish and Emelynn met a couple of new Beagle mixes, Dixie and Carly, a bonded pair, seven and eight years old. These little girls are well-behaved and looking for a new home together. They enjoyed play group on Sunday. If you’re a Beagle person, these two might be for you!

DSCN0900

I’m new here! Looking for a fun family!

Trish had a great time with another newbee, Molly, an Australian Shepherd/Australian Cattle Dog mix. Molly is four years old and very active. She would enjoy and benefit from WHS classes and would love to try some agility training. Molly is a happy girl and hoping for a family to love.

DSCN0838At the end of my shift, I went into the administration offices for a quick question. I was met by Karma, Jen Kaser’s rescued S.T.A.R.T. dog whom we all love.

Page_1 copyThat’s it for this week, and what a great week it was!

Remember, if you see a dog on my blog whom you are interested in meeting, try to make arrangements to get to the Willamette Humane Society soon. Some dogs are adopted more quickly than you might think.
