Dear Fellow Dog Lovers,

After two weeks of packing, unpacking, sorting, and arranging, my husband and I are settling into our new home and I’m back to writing about shelter dogs. However, I’ll miss the next two weeks again, as we are heading out on an Alaskan cruise! Seeing humpback whales has been on my “bucket list” for many years and I hope to finally see them in person!

In the meantime, I’ll try to catch you up on the dogs at WHS. This week’s post will be a little different. Since we have so many newbies, I decided rather than writing detailed descriptions of three dogs followed by Quick Looks, I’m going to have all Quick Looks so that you can get a feel for many of the adoptable dogs we currently have at the shelter.

But first, I have two wonderful stories to tell you.

Princess Ledi

You’ll remember Ledi, whose adoption I wrote about in my last post. She was adopted by a young girl named Destiny and the love connection between the two was instant. I’ve been so happy that Destiny’s mother has kept me in the loop about Ledi’s new life and has sent me many pictures showing Ledi and Destiny’s adventures together. Here are a few that will show you the wonderful life of a well-loved shelter dog who became a princess when she met her destiny.

A visit to see old friends at WHS:

Hanging out at home:

Girlie wins a Jackpot!

If you are a regular reader of my blog, you know Girlie well. I wrote about her in many posts, hoping her perfect family would find this very special girl. She had been waiting since January. She’d been adopted three times, but returned each time, none of the homes being the right one. Then on July 3rd, our wonderful senior long-termer and well-loved Girlie was adopted for the last time. And it is a “Jackpot” of a home! Seriously! WHS friend, supporter, and former volunteer dog-walker, Beth, and her husband, Brian, along with their dog, Jackpot, adopted our girl! Since Girlie came to us as a transfer from Hawaii, she now has a new Hawaiian name, Mahina. Beth reports that Jackpot and Mahina are head-over-heels in love. I decided I just had to visit Girlie, I mean Mahina, and her family and I am so glad I did! To say Mahina has settled in would be an understatement! She and Jackpot are BFFs, romping around the yard, going for morning walks, and sleeping on the couch. Jackpot has been very lonely since his sister Reno died, and is over the moon to have a new love. Beth and Brian couldn’t be happier, either. Here are some pictures from my visit. What a perfect family!

Two BFFs:

Before I give you some quick looks at new available dogs, I need to tell you that you can’t keep a devoted shelter volunteer down. Marianne had foot surgery on Wednesday. By Sunday she was determined to come to WHS and help in some way. So I sat her in a chair, handed her a clip board and my new dog pictures list, and gave her the job of keeping track of who I was photographing.

But it wasn’t long before she had to meet the dogs.

Here she is with Puka, a seven-year-old Terrier mix.

Volunteer Lindsay came in to sub dog-walk on Sunday. Here she is with Yantzi, a four-year-old Chihuahua/Miniature Pinscher mix.

Here is Linda with Camo. This eight-month-old Hound mix is looking for a person who wants the fun and challenge of positive training an enthusiastic and entertaining youngster.

Harmony is a two-year-old Lab mix. Kim fell in love with her.

This beauty is Aria, a two-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier mix. Both Marianne and I fell for this perfectly behaved sweetheart.

Tyler had a blast playing with four-month-old Blondie, a Lab/Husky mix. I was lucky to catch her nanosecond of calm to snap some pictures.

Caitlin couldn’t wait for me to meet Rumble, a goofy two-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix. This boy loves to splash in the pool and romp. Such a fun boy!

And here he was today in the newly remodeled Real Room! He had a blast! And so did Ayla, Marianne, Caroline and I. He kept us laughing!

Twister is a three-year-old large mixed-breed dog, here with Linda. This enthusiastic, happy boy is hoping for an active family to entertain.

Diva is an eight-year-old mixed breed dog who is such a sweet, quiet soul. Caitlin, Marianne, and I all fell head-over-heels for this gentle senior. We don’t think she can hear very well. We’re hoping she doesn’t have to be at the shelter for very long. By the way, she’s a lap dog.

Just when I thought we’d seen all the goofy dogs there were currently at the shelter, we met Flower, a two-year-old mixed breed who is such a funny character. She had Tyler, Marianne, and me in stitches. She will be such a fun family dog!

Rosco has been waiting at the shelter for his perfect fit of a family since October. Today after his walk, we stopped in the big yard to play a while. He loves the pool. Rosco is a four-year-old Shepherd mix.

Marianne took Arnold into the Real Room to get his opinion. He loved it!

And here he was on our walk today. We sat under a tree for a while. Arnold is a seven-year-old Boxer mix.

And a story about our long-termer, Bogart

Last week, with the 96º heat, it was the perfect day for a dip in a pool! And Bogart was ready! So Jolene took him out to the big yard for a swim. And did he enjoy it, head first! Jolene and I couldn’t stop laughing at him! Bogart is a five-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier mix who arrived at WHS in March. He has been patiently waiting and hoping that a new family will adopt him since his first family moved and couldn’t take him with them. Bogart is a big boy at 90 pounds and will need a family with older kids 13+, as he can get very excited about treats, birds, playing fetch, birds, tennis balls, and did I mention birds? Bogart is house-trained and has been around children and done well, but is working on walking more politely on leash. Using a Halti (a head harness) is helping. Bogart will need to be the only pet. He is highly treat-motivated and very smart, which means he would love to learn new skills as long as cheese bits were involved. We’re hoping Bogart’s perfect family will find him soon; he’s been waiting for them a long time.

Sami!

Remember Sami, who in two years had been surrendered to WHS three times? I was so happy to get another Sami update last week!

“Hi! I thought I would give an update on Sami. We’ve had Sami just over 5 months now. She’s adjusted so well to being a family member.  After losing our other dog of 12 years, I didn’t think it was possible to love another dog as much as we love Sami. We’ve taken her camping at the coast and up to the lake. Recently we’ve taken her to the Keizer dog park after we introduced her to other dogs using WHS Sunday’s playgroup. She loves getting out, exercising and socializing with the other dogs, but she really is a people person. Thank you for introducing Sami through your blog. We sure are the lucky ones who got her.”

On that happy note, that’s it for now. Wish me luck on seeing some humpback whales next week! I’ll see you again on August 2.

Remember, if you see a dog on my blog whom you are interested in meeting, try to make arrangements to get to the Willamette Humane Society soon. Some dogs are adopted more quickly than you might think.
