Happy Halloween, Fellow Dog Lovers!

Saturday evening was the annual Willamette Humane Society Bowser’s Boo Bash and it was a huge success! As the biggest fundraiser of the year, it’s always exciting to wait to hear how much money was raised. I’ll let you know next post. In the meantime, here is a slideshow of some of the many costumes during the fun evening for our shelter animals.

There were twelve happy dog adoptions since my last post. Eight of them were Blog dogs!

Our eleven-year-old Sally was adopted by fellow volunteer Tom. After being an outdoor dog her whole life, Sally has been learning what it means to be an indoor dog and she is loving it. We are all so happy for this sweet older girl who will be well-loved for the rest of her life.

Cece was a favorite of mine the first time she was at WHS as a puppy. When she was surrendered last week, I so hoped she would be adopted again soon, and she was. Here she is the first night in her new forever home. Happy new life, Cece!

Today’s post will be a little different because the shelter dogs asked to have a say in the Halloween issue. They wanted to do the talking… and who was I to disagree?

Caroline’s Pick of the Week!

There was no question who Caroline’s pick was this week! This big guy is Titan, a 112-pound, four-year-old Great Dane/Mastiff mix. Titan is house-trained and has a great history with other dogs, children, and…cats! He’s a laid-back kind of guy and since he already has a hold, we’re hoping he’ll be going to his new home very soon.

Updates!

Remember Belle? This beautiful, affectionate Great Pyrenees/Golden Retriever mix was quite the challenging case, with food-guarding and fear issues. Here she was at WHS.

BellamyWith consistent positive-reward-based training at the shelter, she eventually was ready to go to an experienced foster home for continued work. And then finally, she was ready to be adopted into a patient and experienced family. Last week Catherine, our Canine Behavior Coach, got this super update about Belle’s latest adventure.

“Hello it’s Mark. Just giving you a Belle update. She is an amazing friend. She has come a long way in such a short time. This weekend I took her down to Reno for an Italian festival I go to every year. She was a hit. She did so well with the crowds, the music, the food, everything. Here is a picture of her at the river and with some people she hadn’t met before.”

Moose

Remember Moose? This boy won the heart of everyone he met. Here he was at WHS with volunteer Caitlin.

MooseAnd here is what Jennifer, his new person, wrote last week.

“It’s been two weeks since I adopted Moose and things are going pretty good. He’s such a sweet and affectionate boy. The only real issue I’m working with is his strong separation anxiety, but it’s coming along slowly. He seems to have had a decent baseline training at some point, so it’s been helpful to be able to build on that with commands. He is my first shelter dog, so I’m learning right along side of him.

I want to send a big Thank You! to you and everyone at the Salem area Humane Society for everything you do in taking care of these animals and working to find them their forever homes.”

That’s it for this week! Have a safe and Happy Halloween!
