Dear Fellow Dog Lovers,

Bowser’s Boo Bash 2017 was held last Saturday evening and was its usual big success, bringing in over $100,000 for Willamette Humane Society’s shelter dogs and cats! I was there taking pictures so I could share the fun with my readers. Here’s the fun!

If you are a regular reader of my blog posts, you know that our shelter dogs get outside for three walks every day by our devoted dog-walking volunteers. But that is not all the attention they receive daily. Knowing that a dog’s stress is lowered if they feel happy in their kennel, we also have a volunteer program called Kennel Buddies. Trained volunteers come various times during the day and sit in the dogs’ kennels to play, brush, talk to, and cuddle with them. Sometimes they even read aloud to them. Last week, I happened to see Kennel Buddy Brieann in Chili’s kennel reading The Cat in the Hat. I had no idea it had such a suspenseful plot until I saw Chili’s rapt attention.

You’re in luck! No one has come to adopt me yet! YOU still can!

Pookie had a wonderful surprise on Sunday. Her foster parents stopped in to spend some time with her in Mary’s Place. She was so happy to see them and they loved playing and cuddling with her. Pookie is an eleven-month-old Boxer mix. When she arrived at the shelter, she was quite shy and fearful, especially of men. After spending time working with the Behavior and Training team, she moved into her foster home where she thrived. Pookie is still working on gaining courage when meeting strangers, especially men, but given a little time, she warms up and bonds. She is affectionate, wants to please, and is very smart. Pookie’s new family will need to be committed to rewards-based training with her so that she continues to gain confidence. She would love to be in a home where someone was home all day with her, and will need to be the only pet. She loves going for walks, playing fetch, and snuggling on the couch. We know the perfect family situation is out there for this sweet, shy girl. We just need to find it.

Of course, Marianne and I had to have some Pookie time, too.

After Pookie had so much fun with a Giant Fluff Ball last week, Marianne and I decided she need to have her very own GFB to take home when she gets adopted. She was very proud of it and had a fabulous time playing with it.

I’m shy when I first meet you, but just wait until we become friends! I’m a keeper!

What a difference a few days makes! When Benji, a two-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix, arrived at the shelter, he was frightened and shy. But it didn’t take long before he was a happy, eager boy. Benji LOVES people and spending time with them. He has been working with the Behavior and Training team and gaining more confidence each day. He will need a family with older children who will be patient with him and use reward-based training to continue his progress. Benji will need a feline-free home and would like to meet any canine siblings he would have. He is house-trained, knows several commands and will be a loyal, affectionate new best friend. He has quickly become one of Marianne’s and my favorites! We’re hoping he’ll soon be going to his happy forever home.

Ike’s my name and being your best friend is my game!

Meet Ike, an eight-year-young Golden Retriever mix. You know all those things you hear about that are the characteristics of Goldens? You know, how they are happy, friendly to everyone and everything, energetic, ball dogs? Well, then Ike is the epitome of a Golden. He may be eight, but he still acts like a puppy. He is house-trained, knows several commands, loves people, other dogs and even cats! As long as you have a tennis ball, Ike will play fetch. He has a great history with kids, though older ones would be best, as Ike is a big boy and can be quite exuberant when he’s excited, which is quite often. Marianne and Jenna spent some time with him on Sunday. He seemed to enjoy posing for my pictures… or maybe it was the cheese I had in my hand.

Meet Maui, a five-month-old Border Collie mix, here with Marianne.

This serious-looking fellow is Sabbath, a one-year-old Dogue de Bordeaux mix, here with Jolene.

Here’s a brand-new dog walker (I can’t remember her name!) who spent some quality time on Sunday with little Josie, a one-year-old mixed breed.

This is long-termer Durango, a two-year-old Shepherd mix, here with Tyler.

Misty, a wonderful, sweet fifteen-year-old Australian Shepherd mix, stopped in from her foster home for Ayla to give her a bath, so I shot this pictures before they went to the tub. What a sweet senior, Misty is!

Serena, a three-year-old mixed breed, is a newbie at the shelter, and both Marianne and I fell in love with this happy girl.

This sweetheart is Jenna, a four-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier mix. Marianne couldn’t wait for me to meet her today. She is such a gentle soul!

Bella is a two-year-old mixed breed who loves to play, here with Ayla.

Clyde is a one-year-old Plott Hound mix who is such a character! Both Marianne and I couldn’t stop laughing today, though Clyde took the photo shoot very seriously.

That’s it for this week!

Remember, if you see a dog on my blog whom you are interested in meeting, try to make arrangements to get to the Willamette Humane Society soon. Some dogs are adopted more quickly than you might think.
